''Brachyura'', crabs, are an infraorder of crustaceans encompassing over 7000 species found all throughout the world. Most are aquatic, with species of this type being found in both freshwater and saltwater environments (including all five oceans), but some variants predominantly reside on land. While the crabs in {{DnMe+}} do not appear to be based on any one species in particular, instead amalgamating traits from different ones, they most resemble ''Cancer productus'', one of two species known as the red rock crab, and ''Cancer pagurus'', the brown crab. Both species are widespread in the western fishing industry, and as such inform common cultural depictions of crabs.

Real-world information[edit]

Brachyura, crabs, are an infraorder of crustaceans encompassing over 7000 species found all throughout the world. Most are aquatic, with species of this type being found in both freshwater and saltwater environments (including all five oceans), but some variants predominantly reside on land. True crabs are primarily distinguished by the near total absence of a visible tail, resulting in a distinctly oblong shape and differentiating them from animals which are popularly called crabs but are phylogenetically separate, such as hermit crabs, coconut crabs, and horseshoe crabs. Crabs are omnivorous, and depending on their environment and current circumstances may primarily eat plant matter, prey on living animals, or scavenge corpses.

While the crabs in Doubutsu no Mori e+ do not appear to be based on any one species in particular, instead amalgamating traits from different ones, they most resemble Cancer productus, one of two species known as the red rock crab, and Cancer pagurus, the brown crab. Both species are widespread in the western fishing industry, and as such inform common cultural depictions of crabs.

Notes[edit]

  1. All bugs and fish in the first-generation games can appear at a lower spawn rate up to five days before the start of their first month of availability.
  2. Unofficial translation: "Many of the beach-dwelling crabs live in holes they dig in the sand. Although these crabs do have weak pincers, I was nearly gripped by one of those, so I'm not holding my breath to find out. By the way, have you had the chance to take a good, long look at a crab's eyes? That motionless stare trained on you... Oh, such a terrible feeling...
