Paradise Planning
When the DLC is downloaded, if Resident Services has been upgraded to a building, the player receives a phone call from Tom Nook asking them to visit him and a visitor at the airport. At the airport, Nook introduces the player to Lottie and asks them if they would like to help her design homes. After the player agrees, the option "I want to go to work" becomes available when speaking to Orville. Choosing this option takes the player to a resort archipelago where characters go to find vacation homes. The player works for Paradise Planning, a resort developer, alongside Lottie and new characters Niko and Wardell.

After designing 20 houses, the player is asked by Lottie to prepare their island for a special music festival by completing 10 additional vacation homes and building 2 additional facilities, a hospital and an apparel shop. This culminates in the island receiving a visit from DJ KK, who performs a special music festival.

The player also receives a package from Nintendo containing a Paradise Planning Photo.

Designing homes
The player's job at Paradise Planning is to design vacation homes for villagers and special characters. These characters appear on the archipelago's central island, which also hosts Paradise Planning's office. The first villager that the player works for is Eloise. However, in the instance that Eloise is living on the player's island or staying at the island's campsite, the game will pull up the next villager from the following internal list in order until there is a villager that is not on the player's island: Olivia, Julia, Willow, Friga, Blanche, Cleo, Vivian, Purrl, Bree, Blaire, and Tasha.

Once the player chooses to design a home for a character, they are given the option to choose which island to build the home on; each island has different features, and some have different seasons. Once the island is chosen, the player places furniture items chosen by the character, and from there the interior and exterior of the home can be decorated freely.

As the player designs more homes, more furniture becomes available to use. Homes the player has designed can be remodeled. The player can also suggest existing clients that have a completed home to include roommates. The roommates that the player chooses to add will merge their furniture from their housing order with that of the existing villager's catalog. The player can also rename the villager's theme to their choosing after remodeling.

After the player designs a home, Lottie rewards them with Poki, a currency that can be used at the Paradise Planning shop. The amount increases as the player's job status improves.
Personalization features
The following customization features are new to short:
*Partition walls, which share the same texture as the wallpaper set. They are unlocked after completing eight housing requests, and come in the form of a DIY recipe.
*Counters, in both full-height and half-height. These can be obtained as DIY recipes from Niko.
*Pillars, which can be used with partition walls to provide a right angle corner. These can be obtained as DIY recipes from Niko.
*Lighting customization, where the color and brightness settings can be adjusted. This feature is unlocked while customizing the Café or Restaurant facility.
*Resizing a room, where the player can set the size of the room as 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, or 10x10. This feature is unlocked while customizing the School facility.
*Soundscapes, constant ambient sounds played in a room. This feature is unlocked after completing 17 housing requests and sitting next to Wardell afterwards. Six more Soundscapes are unlocked after completing 25 housing requests. Eight more Soundscapes are unlocked after completing 33 housing requests.
*Polishing, which gives furniture an animated effect of several different choices. Polishing is unlocked after completing four housing requests.

Happy Home Network
A Happy Home Network app can be accessed on the player's NookPhone, where the player can view and visit the homes they have designed. A photo of the house can be taken through the Photo app, and if more than one is taken, then the player can decide to discard either the original image or the retaken one. Houses can be shared over the internet, (if you have the Nintendo Switch Online subscription) and players can follow other designers.
clear

Paradise Planning office
Paradise Planning has an office on the central island where Lottie, Wardell, and Niko work. When finished designing the interior of a villager's new vacation home, the player goes to Lottie to get their Poki, the currency used at Paradise Planning instead of Bells. The player is then able to purchase items with their earnings.

amiibo
After completing seven housing requests, amiibo cards and figures can be scanned at the Paradise Planning office front desk to invite the respective character to have their vacation home designed. While most amiibo can be used right away, certain amiibo (such as Lottie's) can only be used later.

Shop
A shop area in the Paradise Planning office sells five exclusive furniture items. The five items that they have change every day, and all are items that can also be found at Nook's Cranny. The player is also able to purchase Souvenir Chocolates, that, when given to a villager on the player's island, can convince the villager receiving to request a vacation home.

AB&PD
After playing short for quite some time, Lottie will set up an Automated Bell and Poki Dispenser, to allow the player to deposit Poki and do exchanges between Bells and Poki. There is a limit of Bells and Poki that can be exchanged at a time.
clear

Facilities
Five facilities–the School, Café, Restaurant, Hospital, and Apparel Shop–can be designed in the vacant buildings on the main island. Once the facility is set up, the player can staff any villagers present on the main islands to host the facility. Once this is established, various villagers from across the islands will come by to use the facility.

School
School

The School is the first facility in order the player has to design for Paradise Planning. The facility can be built after making six vacation homes. Once this facility is set up, the player can set a character as a Teacher. Leif and Nat can also set up shop here and teach the player the ability to place flowers and bugs respectively for Paradise Planning. The appointed teacher can additionally give the player either a pink or white Plumeria start once per day.

Café
Café

The Café is the second facility in order the player has to design for Paradise Planning if chosen over the Restaurant. This facility can be built after making 12 vacation homes. If the player has reached the title of Superstar Designer, they can build a second floor, the Gallery. Once this facility is set up, the player can set two characters as Staff of the café. If the player speaks to either of them, they are able to purchase food items using Poki.

Restaurant
Restaurant

The Restaurant is the second facility in order the player has to design for Paradise Planning if chosen over the Café. This facility can be built after making 12 vacation homes. This facility has two rooms, the Dining Hall and the Kitchen. If the player has completed three roommate requests after the building is finished, they can build a second floor, the Private Room. Once this facility is set up, the player can set one of four villagers to the following roles: Chef, Apprentice, Cashier, and Employee. When talked to, the Chef will give the player a random cooking recipes.

Hospital
Hospital

The Hospital is the third facility in order the player has to design for Paradise Planning. This facility can be built after making 24 vacation homes; if the player is close to reaching 24 vacation homes, Lottie would later say that her tummy "feels bad," in which Niko takes over her job and the player has to do a house for a random client that is currently shown on the player's archipelago. Then, after the player has made 24 vacation homes, Lottie will tell the player that they can design the Hospital (in which she gets inspired). This facility has two rooms, the Waiting Area and the Examination Room. If the player donates Poki to the Receptionist after the building is finished, they can build a second floor, the Patient Ward. Once this facility is set up, the player can set one villager as the Receptionist and another as the Doctor.

If the player asks the Receptionist to give them a checkup, they will redirect them to the Doctor, who will give the player a clothing item based on the answers the player gives.

Joan visits the hospital every Monday for a checkup and will give the player turnips when spoken to.

Apparel Shop
Apparel Shop

The Apparel Shop is the final facility in order the player has to design for Paradise Planning. This facility can be built after making 30 vacation homes. Once the facility is set up, the player can set one villager as the Shop Manager and decide to allow any type of clothing, or choose a specific clothing setting of either cute, simple, showy, cool, or loose clothes. The player can buy clothes.

Main island features
Various features unlocked while designing homes for Paradise Planning can be used in the player's own home, including partition walls, counters, pillars, lighting customization, and soundscapes. Furniture can also be polished.

The player can invite villagers from their island to Paradise Planning by giving them Souvenir Chocolates. Additionally, the houses of the villagers on the player's island can be customized after 30 homes are designed with Paradise Planning and DJ KK makes his visit, though room-size adjustments will be unavailable for the remodeling of a villager's house. The player can also reset a villager's interior through Isabelle after unlocking the ability to redesign other villager's houses.

Anything that occurs on the main island can also affect what occurs on the archipelago. If a villager that was invited to the archipelago through being gifted a Souvenir Chocolates moves out, if a villager that arrived on the archipelago prior was invited to stay on the player's main island, (and are in boxes), a villager’s birthday or if a villager is sick, their vacation home will be unavailable to visit and they cannot be placed under any role positions in any facility (if one of the villagers that works at the facility have any of the following occurring to them currently, then they will get replaced by another villager living on the archipelago.) The same happens if villagers are currently sleeping (depending on what time based on their personality they sleep), however, they can be placed in the facility and you have to wake them up to visit their vacation home.

In addition, after attending DJ KK's first concert, the player learns the following reactions:
{{Columns-list|colwidth=300px|
Isabelle is a dog in the SER who first appeared in NL, where she helps the player with their duties as mayor. She would later appear in NH, playing a similar, but smaller role as the head of the Civic Consultation Counter at the Resident Services building.

Her name was first revealed as Hisho (ひしょ), which is Japanese for secretary, during the short developer commentary, then was changed in the June 2012 Nintendo Direct to Shizue, a reference to her breed, Shih Tzu. When localized to English, her name became Isabelle. It may be based on the fact that the top of her head resembles a Bell sack. She has a twin brother named Digby who runs the Happy Home Showcase.

Since her introduction in NL, Isabelle has become a mascot for the SER along with Tom Nook, appearing in all subsequent games and becoming the fictional head of the official Animal Crossing Twitter account though she would be temporarily replaced by Tom Nook to promote short until the month of July. Additionally, she is featured in many pieces of non-Animal Crossing media, including cameos in various games and playable roles in Mario Kart 8 and SSBU.

Characteristics
Appearance
Isabelle is a yellow Shih Tzu dog with floppy ears and a ponytail. Her hair is tied up with a ribbon that has a bell on top. As such, whenever she walks, a little jingling sound is made.

In nolink, during spring and summer, Isabelle wears a Town-Hall Spring Top, featuring a green vest and a blue skirt. During the fall and winter months, Isabelle wears a Town-Hall Winter Top, featuring a yellow and brown sweater and a black skirt. In both her outfits, she dons a red ribbon as an accessory. In nolink, Isabelle wears a Coral Nook Inc. Aloha Shirt and a white skirt in spring and summer, while in fall and winter, she wears a white dress underneath a brown sweater with a white flower insignia and a black skirt. During special occasions and events, Isabelle wears an outfit to match the occasion.

Personality
In short, Isabelle tries her hardest to look up to the mayor as their secretary. Whenever the mayor completes a public works project, she will ask the mayor if they want to attend a celebration for the project's completion, and will frown if the mayor vows out with the celebration. She also values the health and safety of the player, especially in instances where the player hasn't played their town in months. During holidays and events, Isabelle will tell the mayor to take a break from their duties in order to enjoy the festivities. She will also close Town Hall if she ends up going to the Plaza to celebrate.

In short, Isabelle retains her hardworking nature from short, but she has also been shown to be extroverted, especially in the instance of her morning announcements. Routinely, she occasionally talks about television, or various aspects regarding her life, such as Digby and her missing sock, only to blush after realizing that what she said does not qualify as news. As of 2.0, this doesn't happen as often, as she usually has different announcements to give.

Appearances
In short
Isabelle's main role in NL is to act as the player's secretary and to help them with their mayoral duties. At the start of the game, she helps the player settle in by offering them advice, as well as providing them with optional tasks akin to those given by Tom Nook in previous games. In addition, she also helps the player earn their development permit, which allows for the enactment of ordinances and the construction of public works projects, by helping them attain a 100% approval rating and, when the player's house is built, making them a resident of the town. When the player gains the abilities to build public works projects and enact ordinances, she assists the human character with those as well, including the ceremonies when projects are complete.

She spends most of the time in the town hall, but is also the main character to stand in the plaza during events. During such events, the town hall is closed, preventing the player from performing their mayoral duties.

Isabelle takes over Mr. Resetti's role of reminding the player about saving until the Reset Center is built. She may be caught sleeping in the town hall if the player has been mayor for at least seven days and has connected to the internet at least once, and this will allow the Dream Suite to be built on Main Street.

In short
In NH, Isabelle acts as Tom Nook's assistant for Nook Inc. Her appearance in short requires the player to move three villagers into houses and wait the full three days for each of them to move in. The day after all three villagers have moved in and unpacked, Tom Nook announces that the Resident Services tent will be upgraded into a full-fledged building and advises everyone to use any functions they need to before construction makes the tent inaccessible. The building closes the following day for construction, and Isabelle will appear inside the building once it is finished.

In the Resident Services building, Isabelle can be seen working at her desk, looking out of the window, or watering the office flowers. If the player sits at the Civic Consultation Center stool, she will help in changing the island tune and flag, resetting other villagers' clothes or speech, and will tell the player about the current island evaluation. Added in the 2.0 update, Isabelle can now enact island ordinances. They are similar to New Leaf’s island ordinances.

Isabelle now wears shoes and she will wear certain hats and outfits throughout events or seasons.

Prior to its removal in version 2.0, when the player scans Isabelle's amiibo card and tries to invite her, she will say:

Hello, this is Isabelle. Player?!
You're so funny! You're practically right in front of me right now, you know!
So, um... What's on your mind?
A visit to the campsite? That sounds like loads of fun...
But...I've got a to-do list a mile long. Do I even have a sleeping bag? No, I'm so sorry, but I really can't go.
It's so nice of you to think of me, though. Some other time, maybe. Thank you!
In HHD, Isabelle is an employee at the Town Hall and gives the player Public Facility projects, because she has heard of the player's renowned house-building skills. She will follow the player to the facility to provide a list of required items. She can also have a home built for her by scanning her amiibo card via the amiibo phone located in Nook's Homes, which she will share with Digby.

In short
In PC, Isabelle acts as an assistant manager for the player at their campsite, providing tips to bring the most out of their camp, as well as providing various goals for the player to accomplish, from within Market Place. Additionally, by crafting the special item Isabelle's Slideshow, the player can invite Isabelle personally to their campsite.
In Animal Crossing × Mario Kart 8
Isabelle is a playable character who - alongside the Villager - is part of the downloadable content pack Animal Crossing × Mario Kart 8, which was released on April 23, 2015. Her signature vehicle is the City Tripper, and she is a lightweight racer.

In the Super Smash Bros series
In wiiu3ds
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Isabelle has a plethora of roles, each of varying degrees of importance. The secretary makes an appearance as an Assist Trophy, replacing Mr. Resetti as the sole Animal Crossing series Assist Trophy. Once summoned, she tosses fruit at the player who summoned her, which heal them upon contact. However, only the summoner has the advantage of being able to recover by simply touching the fruit; the other players can heal via the fruits, but they first must pick them up and use them as if they were an item.

In addition, Isabelle is a Smash Tour item that, when used, causes all the nearby stat boost items to grow to their maximum size.

A Mii Fighter costume based on Isabelle - consisting of a hat and an outfit - was released as downloadable content on June 14th, 2015. The headgear can be adorned by all three variants of Mii Fighter, while the outfit is only available for the Mii Gunner (with the standard gun being replaced with a party popper).
In nolink
Isabelle is a playable character in SSBU. She was revealed during the September 13, 2018 Nintendo Direct, tying with the initial teaser reveal for the then-untitled short. She is marked as a semi-clone of Villager, but is not marked as an Echo Fighter, a term used in nolink to mark clones like Lucina. Isabelle is classified as Fighter #68.

In addition to her role as a playable fighter, her Mii Costume from wiiu3ds returns.

Unlock requirements
In nolink, Isabelle is an unlockable fighter; as such she will need to be unlocked by completing either of the following requirements:
*Every ten minutes, a new challenger will appear in a specific order. Isabelle is the 21st fighter to be unlocked,.
*To unlock Isabelle in Classic Mode, the player must complete Classic Mode under Pikachu's branch.
*To unlock Isabelle in World of Light, the player must have the spirit of Kapp'n (Wild World) to be able to ride in the Bus to her unlock stage. Once Isabelle is freed, a simple path is made to the town.
With the exception of the last option, the player would then need to fight Isabelle on Town and City.

Moveset
Isabelle has various mechanics shared with Villager, including the neutral special Pocket, her grab using a Net, her forward tilt swinging an Umbrella, her aerials firing Slingshot, her down and up aerials swinging Turnips, and a sapling pot that she drop for her dash attack.

However, there are some unique movesets for her as well. For instance, her neutral attack has her using a Toy Hammer to attack her opponents. Her forward smash fires a Party Popper and her up smash will result in her pulling up a Do-not-enter Sign.
|Pocket
|
|Isabelle's neutral special. It acts very similar mechanically to Villager's neutral special, where any projectiles thrown is grabbed and stored by Isabelle. She can then use the move again to use the projectile to harm the fighter, or immediately throw it back. Consumables like the Superspicy Curry and Food are used when the move is presed.
|-
|Fishing Rod
|
|Isabelle's side special. She summons a Fishing Rod that will catch any fighter which she will immediately throw forward. Previously, the move allowed duplication of Assist Trophies. This was patched in version 2.0.0.
|-
|Balloon Trip
|
|Isabelle's up special. She sits on a wooden platform and glides upwards with two Bunny Balloons color-oded to the player's color. Her version of Balloon Trip is much shorter than that of Villager's.
|-
|Lloid Trap
|
|Isabelle's down special. She digs a rocket resembling Lloid in the ground, and any fighters that step on the trap will cause the fighter to be launched upwards. The move is akin to a projectile, meaning another Isabelle can pocket one's Lloid Trap and use the move against them.
|}

Isabelle's Final Smash is Dream Town Hall, acting in a similar mechanic to Villager's Dream House but dealing more damage. Isabelle first traps an opponent before Tom Nook and the Nooklings, where she pays them bells to build her a Town Hall. Once this task is accomplished, the jingle after completing a home loan in short plays, before the Town Hall explodes that causes knockback and damage to opponents.
Tips
Isabelle's Origins
*"Isabelle first appeared in Animal Crossing: New Leaf in 2013. She is a secretary that supports the main character, who happens to become the mayor of the town."

In Her Series
*"Isabelle is loved by all the residents and is always happy to help. She loves festivals and changes her outfit depending on the season and event."

Pocket
*"Use this move to put items or incoming projectiles into Isabelle's pocket. Press the button again to take the item or projectile back out of her pocket."

Fishing Rod
*"Cast the fishing hook to catch opponents, then reel them in and launch them forward, backward, up, or down. Opponents and even items can be caught while reeling in the line as well!"
*"If the fishing hook catches the edge of the stage, you can pull yourself up with it. You can also catch nearby opponents with the hook and bring them down with you."

Balloon Trip
*"Unlike the Villager, Isabelle will float up sitting on a swing-like seat attached to bunny-shaped balloons. The move is pretty much the same as the Villager's, but it's, like, super cute."

Lloid Trap
*"If someone walks over the buried Lloid, it will rise up and deal damage. After burying Lloid, you can do another down special to make Lloid rise on command."

Dream Town Hall
*"Tom Nook and his gang will show up and build the town hall from nolink on top of an opponent. At the end, it will explode, launching anyone nearby."
When the player first arrives on the main Paradise Planning island, Niko redirects the player to the office to meet with Lottie. After introducing the player to both Lottie and Wardell, Lottie designated Niko to train and assist the player in handling the decoration of any new vacation homes. He also ferries the player to any vacation home whether that be for construction, visiting, or remodeling. Niko is interested in DIY, and occasionally builds DIY on the workbench in the upstairs room of the Paradise Planning building. There are a few recipes that Niko will teach the player, such as the Pillar and Island Counter DIY recipes. In the Paradise Planning building, there is a box to donate unwanted DIY materials.

If the player chooses to design a house for Niko, his role will be taken over by Lottie.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a simulation game for the Nintendo Switch released on March 20, 2020. It is the fifth main installment in the SER outside of Japan.

In a departure from previous titles in the series, the player lives on a deserted island rather than in a town (referred to as the "Nook Inc. Deserted Island Getaway Package"), which can develop into a town-like community as players progress through the game. Crafting from PC has also returned in this installment in the form of the DIY system, along with expanded customization of furniture and the player characters.

nolink is a critical and commercial success, having received positive reviews from critics and selling over 34 million copies as of September 2021, making it the best-selling game in the nolink and the second best-selling Nintendo Switch game behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Development on the game began shortly after the Japanese release of NL prior to the development team being aware of the Nintendo Switch. As with the previous title, Aya Kyogoku was chosen as the director of the game, with Hisashi Nogami in charge as producer.

Kyogoku notes in an interview that the team chose to be ambitious even despite not knowing anything about the hardware that they would eventually release the game on. The team intended for the game to be welcoming for veteran players and accessible for new players by keeping much of the core gameplay from previous titles while still adding in many new elements. The theme of developing a town on a deserted island was chosen because the developers believed that breaking away from the tradition of players moving into a village would be a fresh and interesting concept for old players. Kyogoku noted that some players of previous entries would have difficulty finding goals or objectives. As a response to this feedback, a sense of purpose was purposely developed by having players develop the village from scratch. The developers felt that as players constructed their village from the ground up, they would grow a more personal relationship with their town.

As a result of choosing a deserted island theme, crafting was added into the game. This was done so that players would have a higher level of interactivity with the deserted island. This would give players a different perspective of the environment that used to be just a visual aspect. Crafting was also developed with the intention of keeping players from running out of things to do during the hours that their shops are closed. Another of these new features, terraforming, was added in response to unexpected behavior from players in previous games such as resetting towns in order to receive a desirable town layout. With the introduction of crafting and terraforming, players are able to be more in control of their island. This flexibility in design extends further onto player design. Unlike previous games which involved players having to answer a series of questions to determine their appearance, players are now able to freely change their appearance whenever they'd like to through the use of mirrors or vanities. In addition to this, several new hair and facial features were added that were not present in previous entries. A gender option, referred to as "style" in English versions, is still present, but does not impact the game or the player's appearance in any way other than certain dialogue differences. Kyogoku states in an interview that this level of player customization is not just about gender, but rather more about individuality, which the development team believed was a growing belief within society. Players are not forced into thinking too much about gender, but the option is still there should they decide to.

The addition of the NookPhone was inspired by the belief that phones are essential tools in everyday life. Kyogoku has stated that the NookPhone serves as a source of familiarity between the real world and the game.

In another shift, the effects of time traveling were made less impactful. This is in part due to the fact that seasonal events and holidays are not coded into the game from launch and are instead going to be added through future updates. Kyogoku notes that this method of adding events was not intended to shun time traveling, but rather as a form of creating unity amongst players. Nevertheless, time traveling is still discouraged, though Kyogoku and Nogami do not consider it to be a form of cheating.

The game was teased during a Nintendo Direct on September 13, 2018, in tandem with the announcement of Isabelle for SSBU, and was originally slated to be released in 2019.

During E3 2019 on June 11, 2019, the gameplay (from a trailer and Treehouse interview) and title were shown. It was revealed that the game had been delayed to March 20, 2020; it was stated that "to ensure the game is the best it can be, we must ask that you wait a little longer than we thought." Later, President of Nintendo of America, Doug Bowser, said the following: "The crunch point is an interesting one, for us, one of our key tenets is that we bring smiles to people's faces, and we talk about that all the time. It's our vision. Or our mission, I should say. For us, that applies to our own employees. We need to make sure that our employees have good work-life balance. One of those examples is, we will not bring a game to market before it's ready. We just talked about one example. It's really important that we have that balance in our world. It's actually something we're proud of."

This title supports more languages than all previous entries in the series, being the first main series game to support the Chinese language since DnM, It is the first title to include all localizations collectively regardless of regional release, and the first main series title to include Dutch and Russian languages.
nolink is the first title in the series to launch worldwide on the same date.
Gameplay
Premise
Tom Nook has a new business venture: selling the Nook Inc. Deserted Island Getaway Package, which is sold to the player. The game begins on a nearly deserted island where the player can explore, collect resources, and craft various items (including tools and furniture). The only starting buildings on the island are the player's tent, two villager tents (after the player places them), and the Resident Services tent. The Plaza in front of Resident Services will feature events and visitors. These visitors will have items and services to offer to the player.

Donating 5 unique fish and insects to Tom Nook will unlock the ability to place Blathers' tent. Once Blathers' tent is unlocked, he will give the player a Vaulting Pole to find more creatures and a Shovel to excavate Fossils. Donating 15 more unique creatures and appraised fossils to Blathers will unlock the ability to place his museum, at which the player can donate and assess multiple things at a time. To unlock more tools, the player will need to pay off their tent, help Tom Nook build Nook's Cranny, build one bridge, and start three additional housing plots for animal villagers.

Once the Resident Services tent is upgraded into a building, Isabelle returns as Nook's assistant and the player is tasked with improving the island's popularity to draw the attention of K.K. Slider. Nook instructs the player to pick a location for a Campsite, then to furnish additional housing plots and increase the island's population, and finally to develop the island to a three-star rating. The player earns the Island Designer app once they obtain a three-star rating, allowing K.K. Slider to perform "Welcome Horizons" on their island. After acquiring the proper terraforming tools with Nook Miles, the app allows players to pave roads (instead of having to place patterns on the ground), as well as modify or add rivers and cliffs.

Island lifestyle
In addition to earning Bells, the player can also earn Nook Miles, which is a new form of currency that can be exchanged for furniture, Nook-branded apparel, plane tickets to mystery islands, upgrades, and recipes.

As in HHD, the game features the ability to place furniture outside. A new Vaulting Pole tool can be created, giving the ability to vault over rivers, as well as a Ladder, allowing the player to climb up cliffs.

Up to eight players can live on a single island, but only one island can be made per Nintendo Switch. The first player is named the "Resident Representative", which occupies a similar role to the mayor in NL; this player controls the pace of the storyline, and is the only player that can initiate placement of villager housing plots and infrastructure such as stores, bridges, and inclines (though all players will have access to the Island Designer app once K.K. performs). Additionally, there is a maximum of 10 animal villagers on the island.

Resources
Resources can be collected through various methods, such as chopping at trees with an axe for several types of wood (including wood, softwood and hardwood), or hitting rocks with a shovel for clay, stone, and ores. Several different types of weeds appear, which can also be used as materials once plucked. Crafting is done through either Tom Nook's workbench, or a bench crafted by the player. With these mechanics, the player is able to build and develop the island over time. Players are also able to dig up clams in the sand, which can then be used as fishing bait or as crafting materials. Additionally, trees and flowers can be shoveled up to be stored in the pocket, flowers can be used as crafting material, and picking them will also leave the stems in the ground.

Player
Players can fully customize their characters at the beginning and during the game without having to answer questions, similar to HHD and short. This includes skin tones, gender-neutral hairstyles, and nose shapes. The player characters' overall design is slightly more detailed than in previous titles, featuring a more subdued color scheme and clear hair physics and shaders. The players also appear more expressive, showing a thoughtful expression when selecting items in their pocket, and moving their eyes around to look at nearby villagers and bugs.

The player also possesses a new item called the NookPhone, which features multiple different applications that the player can use such as Nook Miles, Rescue Service, Local Play, and more.

The player can purchase a variety of clothes from the Able Sisters shop and presumably other shops that will appear after doing certain tasks. The Able sisters will set up their shop after to buy a fair amount in Bells from them. Able Sisters now includes a fitting room, allowing the player to try on clothes before purchasing.

Multiplayer
Multiplayer#In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
An island can support up to eight players. For the first time in the series, four players can play at the same time on a single system, and up to eight can play together through online multiplayer or local wireless. Online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

In local multiplayer, the screen boundaries will follow player 1; however, they may transfer their "leadership" to another player at any time. The lead player is the only player able to see notifications after catching bugs or fish. In online play, all players have equal abilities, as in previous games.

This marks the first game where a player's friend cannot modify the island with their shovel or axe unless they are marked as a best friend.
Nintendo eShop description
Escape to Your Personal Island Paradise
:Escape to a deserted island and create your own paradise as you explore, create, and customize in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons game. Your island getaway has a wealth of natural resources that can be used to craft everything from tools to creature comforts. You can hunt down insects at the crack of dawn, decorate your paradise throughout the day, or enjoy sunset on the beach while fishing in the ocean. The time of day and season match real life, so each day on your island is a chance to check in and find new surprises all year round.

:Show off your island utopia to family and friends—or pack your bags and visit theirs. Whether playing online or with others beside you, island living is even better when you can share it. Even without hopping on a flight, you'll meet a cast of charming animal residents bursting with personality. Friendly faces like Tom Nook and Isabelle will lend their services and happily help you grow your budding community. Escape to your island getaway—however, whenever, and wherever you want.
Trivia
*nolink marks the longest time between the release of two main SER games, at 7 years, 4 months, and 12 days from NL's release in Japan on November 8, 2012.
*nolink is the second mainline game in the nolink not to feature K.K. Slider on its boxart, the first being the international release of PG.
*Likely to tie into nolink's de-emphasis of gender, villagers with "gendered" catchphrases had their catchphrases changed in this game to use more gender-neutral language. Cole, Cube and Stu, who all formerly included "dude" in their catchphrases, now say "cooooool," "brainfreeze," and "mrooooo," respectively. Shep, who formerly said "baaa man" as his catchphrase, now says "baa baa baa". Fuchsia, whose catchphrase was formerly "girlfriend", now says "precious". These changes were later incorporated into PC as of version 3.4.0.
The Nintendo Switch, codenamed "NX", is a hybrid gaming console and is Nintendo's current video game console. Officially revealed via a trailer posted on Nintendo's YouTube and social media channels on October 20, 2016, it was released worldwide on March 3, 2017, with a suggested retail price of US$299.99. On September 13, 2018, Nintendo announced a teaser for the then-untitled NH, and after being delayed, was released on March 20, 2020.

The Switch is a hybrid device: players can play it as a handheld console or as a home console using a TV-connected dock. Similar to the DS and 3DS, cartridges serve as the physical format of its games. The Nintendo Switch ecosystem was the first Nintendo system to use a paid online service known as Nintendo Switch Online. As such, nolink is the first game in the SER where online is limited to paid users. The Nintendo Switch's built-in screenshot feature allows screenshots to be taken with the tap of a special square button on Nintendo Switch controllers; this also makes nolink the first mainline game not use an in-game screenshot system.

Prior to the release of nolink, Nintendo released a special edition of the Switch for a limited time that features a short-themed dock and Joy-Cons. In September 2020, Nintendo announced the special edition console will return to retailers at an unknown date.

The Nintendo Switch is also available as a furniture item in PC and nolink.
Gray langurs are a species in the SER. Niko is the only gray langur to date. In short, he works for Paradise Planning, a service that designs vacation homes for villagers. The villager Deli highly resembles a gray langur, but he is listed as a monkey. The only games to feature gray langurs are Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp (both as special characters).
OK Motors (OKモータース, OK Mōtāsu) is a camper customization store in PC. Giovanni, Carlo, and Beppe, who are new to the SER, are three ravens that run the shop. On February 13, 2018 an arcade cabinet resembling a slot machine was added as part of the 1.2.0 short update. This machine sits outside of OK Motors and provides access to the Brake Tapper mini-game. Once Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released, Nintendo decided to promote Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp by releasing Pocket Camp items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Once of these such items was the Brake Tapper game.
