Gameplay with four players

Up to four players may play the game using Wii Remotes held sideways, dressed up as animals, and they must run around a town collecting candies scattered across the town and in trees, while evading two guards (in costumes based on Booker and Copper) being controlled by a fifth player using a Wii U GamePad. The player using a Wii U GamePad utilizes both of the Wii U GamePad's control sticks to control both guards. If the animals can collect a certain number of candies (40 for four players, 35 for three or 30 for two), they will win. However, the animals lose if they get caught by the guards three times in total (whenever or not the same animal got caught three times or three different animals got caught). The more candies the animal holds, the slower they can run, making the characters easier to catch for the guards. The animals are able to drop candies at will in order to run faster. If a guard catches an animal, that player will lose a large batch of candies. If there is only one animal, the objective will be to collect 15 sweets and drop them in dishes dotted around the map, rather than to just collect them.

Although no more than five players are officially supported in Animal Crossing: Sweet Day, up to six players can participate if two players share the GamePad to controls the guards cooperatively.
