The aurora borealis, known as the northern lights in the north and southern lights or aurora australis in the south, is a natural phenomenon only visible in the Arctic and Antarctic circles (approximately 65° north or south of the equator). It is only visible at nighttime and is caused by the collision of particles in the sky.
In Animal Crossing: City Folk and Animal Crossing: New Leaf the aurora is visible on clear winter nights, and can be seen from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. It is at its brightest at 9 p.m., shining bright shades of pink and green and moving constantly in a folding motion. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it appears in similar conditions as early as 7 p.m.
The aurora in City Folk has been specified as the Northern Lights by peppy villagers, but this may not be true, as they tell players: "Well, at least that's what they told me!"
Residents of the player's town may comment on the aurora when it is in the sky. It can be seen best by pressing the "up" arrow on the D-pad while outdoors, enabling the player to get a full view of the sky.
