The Calm Painting is one of the pieces of artwork available in the Animal Crossing series games. It is based on a painting by Viennese artist Georges Seurat, entitled A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. It was painted using pointillism, a method by which the artist uses dots to create a blur of colors, and is one of the most well-known examples of its kind. A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte was painted from from 1884 to 1886.
With age, the yellow colors used by Seurat have faded into browns due to the compound he used, zinc chromate. Due to the fact that this color degrades over time (and is also toxic, carcinogenic, and can result in death with prolonged exposure), it is rarely used in art.
In the Animal Crossing series, the Calm Painting is categorized as Colorful/Brown. It can be donated to the museum, but may be fake in Animal Crossing: Wild World and Animal Crossing: City Folk.
