Nookipedia (formerly known as Animal Crossing Wiki) is an online wiki encyclopedia for the Animal Crossing series, founded on October 23, 2010 and hosted by Jake. It is a member of the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance, a collaboration of independent Nintendo-oriented wikis.
History
Animal Crossing Wiki (2010)
On July 12, 2010, Animal Crossing Wiki was set up. It was originally run by Leem01, a moderator on the (now defunct) animalcrossingforums.net. Although the wiki received an affiliation with NIWA and obtained a few edits, a database problem caused the wiki to shut down without any backups created.
Nookipedia (2010–present)
Nookipedia owes its history to Animal Crossing City, originally hosted on Fandom (named Wikia at the time). Founded in August 2005, Animal Crossing City was created on Fandom by user Aeryka. Shortly after its fifth anniversary, Fandom opted for a mandatory implementation of a new skin, 'Oasis'. The change was controversial and caused many wikis to move off the site, including Animal Crossing City.
Around the same time, Animal Crossing Wiki was relaunched under Jake on October 23, 2010 and separate from the original wiki created from July 2010. Their intention was to gradually obtain an membership in the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance. By November, staff members from Animal Crossing City, who had previously tried ShoutWiki for their move away from Fandom, opted to ask Jake to help merge their wiki databases from Animal Crossing City with that of Animal Crossing Wiki. Later that year, the merger with Animal Crossing City completed, and on November 19, 2010, Animal Crossing Wiki joined NIWA.
At the end of 2010, the staff agreed on a name change to Nookipedia (from Animal Crossing Wiki), to give the wiki a distinct and memorable name, as well as a new site skin. This update was completed in time for new year and launched to the public on January 1, 2011.
The wiki has since overseen the rise in popularity of the Animal Crossing series from the likes of Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the latter of which resulted in Nookipedia taking on a prominent role in the ACNH Spreadsheet Community. In mid-2020, the wiki initiated the implementation of the MediaWiki extension Cargo, allowing for databases of various aspects of the Animal Crossing series, such as items and villagers. On October 7, 2020, Nookipedia created ACNH.Directory, an open-source directory of fan sites, communities, and resources for Animal Crossing: New Horizons.[1]
