Compatibility is fan-term for how well two villagers will act towards each other in New Leaf. The way villagers act towards each other is based on a mixture of their personality, species, and star sign.[1] Villagers can have a good, neutral, or bad relationship.

Members with the same element will gain a ♥. Members of Fire & Water or Earth & Air gain ×. All others gain ♦.
Determining the Relationship
- Good Compatibility: 2 or more ♥, ♥♦♣, or ♥♦♦
- Bad Compatibility: 2 or 3 ×
- Average Compatibility: Any other combination.
