Fêng shui[1] (pronounced ˌfʌŋˈʃweɪ, "fung-shway"), also formatted as feng shui, is a game mechanic in which HHA score and luck regarding items and money are increased based on the arrangement of furniture in the player's house. It is based on a practice originating from ancient China in which housewares are arranged in a certain way to increase the flow of positive energy throughout a house.

There are two ways to effect fêng shui: placing items of certain colors in designated areas of a room, or placing lucky items anywhere in a room.

Item color

Every item has a color assigned to it, but there are only three colors that affect fêng shui: red, yellow, and green. Feng Shui works by matching the color of the items to their appropriate squares in the room, or in New Leaf and New Horizons, the wall they hang on.

The two rows of tiles along the east (right) wall, and the wall itself, are red.
The two rows of tiles along the west (left) wall, and the wall itself, are yellow.
The two rows of tiles along the south (lower) wall, and the wall itself, are green.
The four tiles in the southeast corner are red/green.
The four tiles in the southwest corner are yellow/green.
Non-Feng Shui tiles in the middle of medium and large rooms.

Red

Red fêng shui increases item luck. One may find an increased number of items from outside one's furniture group in Tom Nook's store. Items are also more likely to fall when the player shakes trees.

Yellow

Yellow fêng shui increases money luck. This increases the number of Bells given to the player by villagers as rewards for helping them. Bells are more likely to drop when the player shakes trees as well as the number of Bells that fall increasing from 100 to 200. The number of Bells dropped from the money rock will also increase up to a max of 32,000.

Green

Green fêng shui increases overall luck.

Lucky items

Lucky items increase fêng shui no matter where they are placed. Certain lucky items also correspond to specific fêng shui colors, which can further increase luck when placed properly.
