Food is a special type of item throughout the Animal Crossing series. It comes in the form of either furniture, handheld items, or miscellaneous items, and is able to be eaten. Until Animal Crossing: New Horizons, eating food items had no greater gameplay effect.
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, food gained more prominence with the addition of an energy point gauge. Each eaten food item gives the player one or more energy points. The player can use these energy points to either break rocks with a shovel or axe, or relocate hardwood, cedar, fruit, money, and coconut trees with a shovel. Once the player has either broken a rock or grabbed a tree, they will deplete one energy point. To quickly empty their energy points, the player can use a toilet item to reset their energy points to zero. Handheld food items, such as drinks and ice cream, can be eaten three times, granting one energy point each time; after the third use, the item will be used up and disappear. The max energy points the player can have is ten. Once the limit is reached, the player cannot eat any furniture items marked as a dish or a drink.
Katrina can temporarily change the amount of energy points the player will receive when eating a food item. If the player receives good luck on their health, the food items will give double the energy points. If the player receives bad luck on their health, the food items will give them half the energy points.
