Friend Codes are strings of twelve numbers used to allow access to another person's town during online play, more commonly known as Wi-Fi. Both players must have registered each other's friend code. A friend code looks like ####-####-####, or ????-????-???? in WW, where #s and ?s represent numbers. To get one's friend code, they must go to the Town Gate and talk to Copper. They then must select "Friend Code!" and he will assign them a friend code, though they must have Wi-Fi Connection from a router or USB cable for it to work. Once the friend code is obtained, a person can trade their code with a friend and visit each other's towns. If only one person has registered the code, it will not work.

A player's Friend Code in Animal Crossing: City Folk

Friend Codes are strings of twelve digits used to allow access to another person's town during online play in Animal Crossing: Wild World, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

In Animal Crossing: Wild World and Animal Crossing: City Folk, Friend Codes must be assigned by speaking to Copper at the Town Gate and selecting "Friend Code!". Once selected, Copper will attempt to connect to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to assign a code; however, due to the termination of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in 2014, it is no longer possible to receive a Friend Code in Wild World and City Folk.

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Friend Codes are instead on a system level and are automatically assigned when the games' respective consoles are connected to the internet.
