Fruits are items that grow on trees in the town in all Animal Crossing series titles. When the player first creates their town, there is only one type of fruit tree in it, and therefore only one type of fruit. This fruit, either an apple, cherry, peach, pear or orange, is called the "native fruit", and is considered common by the town's inhabitants. Tom Nook will buy each native fruit for only 100 Bells. However, non-native fruits sell for 500 Bells per fruit.

Fruits also appear in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Appearing in Tortimer's Island stage, various fruits from the trees are used to recover fighters' health. They are also thrown by Isabelle when she appears as an Assist Trophy in both the Wii U and 3DS versions.

Obtaining fruit

Any fruit can be grown in the town, and therefore players can share their native fruit with one another and obtain at least one other type of fruit. However, fruit can also be received as a gift from villagers in any Animal Crossing game or as a gift from Mom in Wild World and New Horizons. In City Folk, players can acquire non-native fruit by traveling to a town where they grow and can mail fruit to players in other towns. In New Horizons they can be obtained from other players' Islands or going to a Mystery Island which may rarely have a foreign fruit. Each fruit tree, if it grows, will continuously grow three fruit every three days, with the exception of perfect fruit trees in New Leaf, which die eventually.

New to New Leaf is the ability to stack fruit. Identical pieces of fruit can now stack in "bunches" of up to nine fruit per inventory slot, allowing players to theoretically carry a maximum of 151 pieces of fruit.^[1] The player must manually stack the fruit, however. This means that any fruit that is picked up uses one slot, so, in the inventory, the player must drag the fruit on top of another fruit to stack it. This is improved on in New Horizons - the fruit pieces automatically stack up to ten fruit per inventory slot. This allows the player to carry a maximum of 400 pieces of fruit in this game.

To get non-native fruit in City Folk without the need for Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the player must send a letter to a resident of their town with the contents saying "How are you?" with a fruit attached, native or not. A couple days later, a letter with a present attached will be received, containing a fruit, native or non-native, or a shirt. The same thing works with sick neighbors, with "Get well soon!" being on the letter.

Growing fruit trees

The player can grow a fruit tree by burying a piece of fruit in the dirt with one open square on each side of the tree (a tree will not grow if the fruit is planted right up next to a house, for example). Coconut trees function differently, however: the coconut must be buried on the shoreline of the beach, but not in the sand itself. However, in New Leaf and New Horizons, coconut trees (and banana trees in New Leaf) will only grow on the beach.

If the tree grows, it will bear fruit in about five days. The player can shake the fruit off the trees by walking up to a fruit tree with no items in hand and pressing the A button. The fruit will then fall onto any open spaces of ground and can be picked up. The tree will then replenish its fruit in three days.

Coconuts are a non-native fruit in every town. They grow into palm trees that only live close to the shore and grow two coconuts. In Doubutsu no Mori+, Animal Crossing, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Doubutsu no Mori e+, coconuts must be obtained by traveling to the island and sell for 500 Bells, instead of 300. In Wild World and City Folk, coconuts simply drift ashore but are worth the same 500 Bells.

Cedars and oak trees do not bear fruit. They can be bought at Tom Nook's store, and are not the same as fruit trees, even if they look the same. Buying these is the only way to plant them.

Fruit is often requested by villagers, asking the player to give them a piece of fruit, often specifying they want one kind. Completing this favor will improve the friendship with a villager. Additionally, players may send fruit to sick villagers with a letter wishing them to get better. Generally, however, fruit can simply be buried in the ground to create a fruit tree. Fruit can also be sold for 300 Bells.

The player can also give fruit to Wendell in City Folk for the following items:

In New Leaf, fruit can be given to Dr. Shrunk for a snack to obtain various emotions from him.

The player can eat fruit as well, though it only serves an in-game function in New Horizons. Eating fruit increases the player's stamina, allowing them to dig up fully grown trees to plant elsewhere as well as break rocks with an axe. A stamina meter appears on the top left corner of the screen, showing the number of fruit the player has eaten, and will tick down by one for each of those feats the player performs. The entire meter is cleared if a Toilet is used.

Native fruit

Every town will have one of five different kinds of fruit native to their town that is worth 100 Bells each. The other four fruits are considered non-native, and are worth 500 Bells each.

Exotic fruit

Certain kinds of fruit cannot be found in town and must be acquired from other sources. In most games in the series, Coconuts are the only exotic fruit available. Coconut-bearing trees can be found on Animal Island, and their fruit is taken back to the mainland to be planted by the town's beach. As there is no island in Wild World and City Folk, Coconuts will periodically wash up on the beach instead.

New Leaf introduces seven additional kinds of exotic fruit, most of which can be found on Tortimer Island or received from villagers. Persimmons and Bamboo Shoots can only be purchased from the Gardening Corner of T&T Emporium. Additionally, some villagers have a very low chance to give the player one. Bamboo is unique, in that it is more valuable than other fruit (selling for 750 Bells per shoot) and does not grow fruit. Instead, bamboo will seed new shoots every few days that can be found buried nearby, which will grow into bamboo stalks if they are left in the ground and there is sufficient space to grow. The bamboo shoots can be stacked in the inventory, or eaten just like any other fruit.

Perfect fruit

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf only, perfect fruit can be found in addition to normal fruit. There are five different types of perfect fruit in the game:

A perfect fruit is more valuable than regular fruit and can be sold for 600 Bells, or 3000 Bells if the fruit is native to another town. There is usually one perfect fruit in each new town; once the fruit is found, the player may either sell it, or plant it to create more perfect-fruit-bearing trees. A perfect fruit can grow into a perfect fruit tree only in the town that the particular fruit is native to. If the player plants a perfect fruit in a town where the native fruit is different from the perfect fruit, it will grow into a regular fruit tree of that type of fruit. If the player harvests native fruit trees, there is a rare chance that it may grow a perfect fruit. Fertilizer can increase the chances of a perfect fruit growing on a native fruit tree. Trees that bear perfect fruit do so about 4-7 times only. Once a perfect fruit tree has been harvested so many times, the tree will lose its leaves to indicate that it has died. The last three fruit that fall off the tree have two perfect fruit and one rotten fruit. Perfect fruit does not make return in New Horizons.

Rotten fruit

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf only, rotten fruit appears sometimes instead of perfect fruit. As with perfect fruit, there are five different types of rotten fruit in the game:

Rotten fruit will appear only on perfect fruit trees after the player shakes the tree for the last time right when it dies, in which the last three fruit that fall down will have two that are perfect fruit and one that is a rotten fruit. Rotten fruit look the same as a perfect fruit, the only aesthetic difference being the name. Rotten fruit cannot be eaten and when the player attempts to sell to Reese at Re-Tail, she will charge a disposal fee to the player, as it is with trash, spoiled turnips, forged paintings or forged statues. Rotten fruit can be dropped onto the ground, which may attract ants or flies, making them useful if the player is trying to catch bugs. The best way to dispose of it is to either have a type of rubbish bin that the mayor can build as a public works project or one that the player can place inside their house, or the player can simply plant it into the ground, which it will sprout into a dead sapling and disappear the next day. The player can always plant it and dig it up again, which will eliminate it. To get rid of insects gathering around the rotten fruit, but keep it rotten, a player can fill their pockets, attempt to pick it up, and click 'Drop it!'. The rotten fruit will fall to the ground, but without an angry mob of insects feeding around the fruit.

In Pocket Camp

Normal fruit

In Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, unlike the main series games, all normal fruit types are available from the start. There are two coconut trees growing in Saltwater Shores and one on Sunburst Island. For all others, there is one tree each growing in Breezy Hollow, as well as two more trees in Lost Lure Creek which vary by player. Fruits can be gifted to animals or sold for 10 Bells each.

Local-produce fruit

Introduced in the 2.1.0 update, local-produce fruits work similarly to native fruit in the main series. Players are randomly assigned one of three fruits which grows on one tree in Breezy Hollow and one in Lost Lure Creek. There is no way of growing the non-local fruits; these must be bought from other players' market boxes. A player's own local produce is treated the same as normal fruit, but the non-local fruits are considered better when gifted to animals or can be sold for 600 Bells.

Perfect fruit

Every time a fruit regrows it has a 2.38% chance of being perfect, with the exception of coconuts. Perfect fruits are considered a higher quality gift than regular, with perfect non-local fruit being the best possible fruit gift. They can also be sold for 600 Bells. If the player is selling a non-local perfect fruit, they can be sold for 1,200 Bells.
