Furniture are decorative items in the SER.

Using furniture to design houses and public facilities is a major element of HHD, a spin-off based on the main series.
+
Furniture can be placed either on the floor, hung on a wall (beginning in short), hung from the ceiling (beginning in short version 2.0), placed on the ground outside (beginning in short), or placed on top of other furniture. Each item has a size in tiles that it takes up when placed, ranging from 1.0×0.5 to 3×3 in short. Many items that are not classified as furniture, such as gyroids, fossils, bugs, and fish, can also be placed like furniture.

NL has the most furniture in the series, totaling 1764 items (after the Welcome amiibo update) not including refurbishing options. The initial version of NH has seen less furniture, with 807 items, with series furniture being notably absent. It is likely, however, that new furniture will be added as DLC in later updates, such as seasonal gifts.
+
In all main series games, furniture is primarily obtained from Tom Nook's store or Timmy and Tommy's store, with some furniture being exclusive to alternative sources such as other shops, special characters, or events.

All furniture items are represented by leaf icons. This is likely a reference to the abilities attributed to tanuki (the Japan-only species of Tom Nook and Timmy and Tommy) in Japanese folklore, including an ability to shapeshift using leaves.
+
Furniture is represented by a leaf before being placed down. This is likely a reference to how in Japanese folklore, tanuki (the species of Tom Nook and the Nooklings in Japan) can transform leaves into valuable objects.

Furniture can also be given to the player by villagers via letter or as an errand reward, found in the Lost Property, checking the recycle bin, by helping villagers or shaken from trees. Only two pieces of furniture can be found in trees per day. Certain special characters such as Pascal give furniture, and certain series can be obtained at Events. Also, sometimes if a villager is in a good mood, they will give the player something at random, or if they need help "recycling" one. The player can also use a slingshot to hit presents attached to floating balloons, and they will get a random piece of furniture. (WW, CF only) In Animal Crossing, the player would simply wait for the present to get stuck in a tree, then shake the tree to access it, due to the absence of the slingshot.

Furniture can be either crafted using various materials, bought from the Market Place or obtained by eating a Fortune Cookie. Some furniture series are available only during an event. Additional crafting recipes are unlocked by leveling up friendship levels. If a certain friendship level is achieved with a villager, they will request a special furniture. This makes filling the furniture catalog vital for progressing in the game.

Series
Series consist of common, traditional real-life furniture (such as beds, tables and lamps) all with the same theme and appearance. Examples include the Blue Series, Lovely Series and event-exclusive furniture like the Harvest Series. There are ten pieces of furniture in a series (eleven in NL), plus a wall and floor. One of these pieces is usually a rare spotlight item. Happy Room Academy bonuses for complete Series are:

In short
Themes do not consist of common real-life furniture. Instead they consist of items that are all related to a specific theme, but are unconventional and not normally used in the home, and may resemble models or souvenirs. The number of items in a Theme varies between Themes. Examples of themes are the Space Theme and Construction Theme. Having a complete theme is worth a Happy Room Academy bonus of 3,000 points plus 3,000 points for every item in the complete Theme. There appears to be no complete Theme bonus in NL.

Functionality
Sets are small groups of furniture with a common theme, but do not usually have a matching wall or floor. For example, having a Red Sofa and Red Armchair will complete the Red Furniture Set. Happy Room Academy bonuses for complete Sets are 1,000 points times the number of items in the set.

Many furniture items can be interacted with by the player, which is typically done by pressing 'A' while in front of the item. Below are the types of interactions items can have.
 +
*Press/toggle – The player can interact with some items to play a sound and/or animation, either temporarily or until turned off.
 +
*Beds – Beds can be laid down by walking into them, allowing the player to sleep. In short and short, a bed appears in the attic, and sleeping on it allows the player to save the game. In short, beginning in version 1.4.0, laying on a bed in the player's house allows them to dream.
 +
*Chairs – Chairs can be sat on by walking into them.
 +
*Lights – Beginning in short, lights can be toggled on and off to illuminate the area around them.

*Music players – K.K. Slider's song airchecks can be played in a music player.
 +
*Storage – Storage units can hold items. In short, these are instead known as wardrobes, which allow the player to change their clothing and edit wand outfits.
 +
*Surfaces – Items with surfaces can have other, smaller items placed on top of them.
 +
*Diary – In nolink, and only, diaries show a calendar and allow the player to write a diary entry for each month.
 +
*NES game – In nolink, , nolink, and only, NES game items allow the player to play the game represented by the item.

Furniture categories are larger groups of items that share a particular function and were first introduced in WW. They provide the player with an HRA bonus if enough items from the same category are placed in the same room. Originally there were only four categories: Plants, Musical Instruments, Paintings, and Models, until a fifth category, Dolls, was introduced in CF. These categories were further expanded in NL where dozens of new additional items were collectively added to the categories. short also saw the renaming of the Paintings category to "Art" and the shortening of the Musical Instrument category to simply, "Instruments".

Series (furniture)
A new feature in NL; once the player has sold 100,000 Bells worth of items to Reese, has 10 shirts and 50 furniture items in the catalog, and has played the game for at least 7 days, Cyrus wakes up at Re-Tail. For a fraction of the furniture's value, he can change the appearance of certain furniture. Options include changing the color of the furniture, adding a design, or using ores to create a crystallized effect. Customized furniture has a furniture leaf of a different color rather than the standard green, depending on how it was customized.
+
Series consist of around 10 furniture items, as well as a matching wallpaper and flooring. In games before short, they contain only furniture that would be found in a home, such as beds, tables, and dressers. In short, however, any items can be part of a series.

The ability to customize furniture returns in HHD and is unlocked by selecting its corresponding lesson.

Types of furniture
Chairs & sofas
Chairs & Sofas are types of seating that also include armchairs. Players can sit on chairs and sofas.

Beds
Beds are entered by the sides and can be switched with the original beds in the attic. A player lying on a bed will have the eyes closed. If beds are lined up, a player can roll across them as if there is no gap between them. If there is one double bed with two players on it, they can lie on each side, but they will bump into each other if one tries to move to the other side while the other one is still there.

Lamps
Lamps, also known as lights, are used to illuminate rooms. They can be turned on and off using the A button while the player is facing them. In Animal Crossing players can light the room using the Z button. If players do not have a lamp in a room, that room will stay dark. In NL, the color of the furniture can affect the color of the lighting; a lamp with a red lampshade emits red light. This effect can also be seen through a window outside the house.

Storage
Storage Units in short and short replace the basement from Animal Crossing. These include dressers, wardrobes, cupboards, cabinets, and refrigerators. They can hold up to 3 items in PG, 90 in WW, 160 in CF and 180 in NL. In NH, these units do not have storage capacity of their own, but instead can be used to change clothes via the house's built-in capacity.

Clocks
Clocks show what time it is and move as real time passes. Some clocks do different motions every hour, such as the cuckoo clock.

TVs
TVs can be turned on by pressing A. There is a different show every hour. During certain hours, the TV shows the weather for tomorrow.

Tables
Tables can hold other item such as for decorations, fruit or flowers. A glitch in WW prevents turnips spoiling if they are placed on a table.

Decorations
Decorations include Plants, Paintings, Musical Instruments, Trophies, Mementos & Models, Vases, screens, vanities, dolls, fireplaces and other miscellany. They serve no specific purpose other than to improve the house and add to Feng Shui, if positioned correctly. They can be placed on the ground and on Tables or can be saved for later in Storage. Some items, such as the fireplace and the backyard pool, are animated.

Music players
+
Set
Music players, or Stereos, are used to play songs that K.K. Slider gives each Saturday night. Songs are set on a loop and may sound quite different from K.K's original song, but still retain the basic tune. Only one song can be played in each room at a time.
+
Set
 +
Sets consist of around two to five furniture items and do not have matching wallpaper and flooring.

Wall furniture
+
Theme
New in NL, this type of furniture is placed on a wall rather than the floor. Examples of wall furniture include clocks, fans and lamps. Wall furniture is sold at Super T&T, T.I.Y. and T&T Emporium.
+
Theme (furniture)

+
Themes are similar to series, consisting of around 10 furniture items and matching wallpaper and flooring, but the furniture in themes would not typically be found in a home. In short, themes are removed, and series can now contain all furniture.
Other
Fish and bugs can be caught outside and placed inside a house. Fish will appear in an aquarium (the size changes depending of the size of the fish) and bugs will appear in a glass box, making noise if they can.

A player's house in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, containing many furniture items
The icon for furniture in New Horizons

Furniture are decorative items in the Animal Crossing series.

Furniture can be placed either on the floor, hung on a wall (beginning in New Leaf), hung from the ceiling (beginning in New Horizons version 2.0), placed on the ground outside (beginning in New Horizons), or placed on top of other furniture. Each item has a size in tiles that it takes up when placed, ranging from 1.0×0.5 to 3×3 in New Horizons.[nb 1] Many items that are not classified as furniture, such as gyroids, fossils, bugs, and fish, can also be placed like furniture.

In all main series games, furniture is primarily obtained from Tom Nook's store or Timmy and Tommy's store, with some furniture being exclusive to alternative sources such as other shops, special characters, or events.

Furniture is represented by a leaf before being placed down. This is likely a reference to how in Japanese folklore, tanuki (the species of Tom Nook and the Nooklings in Japan) can transform leaves into valuable objects.

Collections

The Blue Series, a furniture collection, placed in a room in Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Some furniture items of a similar theme are categorized into collections by the Happy Home Academy. The player is awarded bonus HHA points if a complete collection is placed in a room. There are three types of collections: series, sets, and themes.

Series

Main article: Series (furniture)

Series consist of around 10 furniture items, as well as a matching wallpaper and flooring. In games before New Horizons, they contain only furniture that would be found in a home, such as beds, tables, and dressers. In New Horizons, however, any items can be part of a series.

Set

Notes

 1. In main series games prior to New Horizons, the only furniture sizes are 1×1, 2×1, and 2×2, with the exception of Happy Home Designer crossover items in Welcome amiibo, which are 3×3.
