The '''Happy Room Academy''' ('''HRA''') is a type of housing association for the player to sign up for. Signing up is optional, and if the player does not sign up initially, they may go to the HRA building later and sign up there. The HRA inspects the player's house each day, and scores it depending on the furniture inside, and how it is placed. The more points the player gets, the better their house is considered. Ways the player can boost scores by placing rare or expensive pieces of furniture in the house or completing furniture series. These each give point bonuses (see below). Players can also help their score by paying attention to Feng Shui.

On Animal Crossing Wild World, the player must join the HRA. Tom Nook first asks the player the second day he or she goes to his store. He will describe what they do and then ask the player if they want to join. If the player says yes, he will be delighted, but if he or she says no, he will seem sad but says that it is required. At the end of both he says ''Good luck!'', signing up the player.
