"Celebrated on July 7th, this is the one day that the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi—represented by the stars Vega and Altair—can meet. Write a wish on tanzaku paper, hang it from bamboo, and wish on the stars!"
— Event description

The bamboo grass is a houseware furniture item in Animal Crossing: New Horizons introduced in the 1.3.0 Free Summer Update (Wave 1).

The bamboo grass can be obtained from Nook Shopping for  3,080 Bells from July 1 to July 7[nb 1] during the Tanabata Nook Shopping seasonal event. This item can only be ordered from the catalog while its seasonal event is ongoing.

When interacted with, the bamboo grass will show a random piece of tanzaku to the player. Each are related to a villager personality or a special character.

  • It's a yellow piece of tanzaku that reads..."I wish for everlasting happiness and harmony!" ( Isabelle)
  • It's a leaf-print tanzaku that reads..."May the island continue to flourish! Socially and economically." ( Tom Nook)
  • It's a green piece of tanzaku that reads..."Please grant me inspiration for new recipes. Oh, and books!" ( Normal villager)
  • It's a red piece of tanzaku that reads..."I wanna live in a big house with motorcycle parking." ( Big sister villager)
  • It's an orange piece of tanzaku that reads..."I wanna be a hero! And a snack would be nice too." ( Lazy villager)
  • It's a pink piece of tanzaku that reads..."I want to be a superstar!'" ( Peppy villager)
  • It's a golden piece of tanzaku that reads..."May I follow in the footsteps of my mentor with great success." ( Nooklings)
  • It's a crinkled piece of tanzaku that reads..."I want to run faster and farther than ever before." ( Jock villager)
  • It's an unusually long tanzaku that seems to be a wish list with "rad" and "sweet" scribbled in the margins. ( Smug villager)
  • It's a tattered piece of tanzaku that reads..."Grant me the willpower to continue cohabitating with bugs." ( Blathers)
  • It's a soaking-wet piece of tanzaku that reads..."Grant me the sea legs of the sturdiest sailor." ( Gulliver)
  • It's a scented piece of tanzaku that reads..."I still dream of walking the red carpet." ( Snooty villager)
  • It's a blue piece of tanzaku that reads..."I hope someday I have a bigger lawn to tell folks to get off." ( Cranky villager)

No villagers have this item in their home.

In Happy Home Paradise, no villagers or facility unlock this item for designing. It can only be used once the player's catalog is unlocked after completing the 27th vacation home.

Real-world information

A photo of a bamboo tree with hanging tanzaku.

A tradition done on the Japanese festival Tanabata (たなばた/七夕?) is for people to write their wishes on a piece of paper known as a tanzaku (短冊?). These are then hanged on a bamboo tree for the remainder of the Tanabata festival. After the festival, the bamboo tree itself, with the tanzaku attached, is either burned or left to float on a river.
