The bamboo grass can be obtained from Nook Shopping for 3,080 Bells from July 1 to July 7^{[nb 1]} during the Tanabata Nook Shopping seasonal event. This item can only be ordered from the catalog while its seasonal event is ongoing.

When interacted with, the bamboo grass will show a random piece of tanzaku to the player. Each are related to a villager personality or a special character.

A tradition done on the Japanese festival Tanabata (たなばた/七夕, Tanabata^?) is for people to write their wishes on a piece of paper known as a tanzaku (短冊, tanzaku^?). These are then hanged on a bamboo tree for the remainder of the Tanabata festival. After the festival, the bamboo tree itself, with the tanzaku attached, is either burned or left to float on a river.
