Item talk:Shogi board (Doubutsu no Mori+)

From Nookipedia, the Animal Crossing wiki

Split this into 2 different item pages[edit]

Dòngwù Sēnlín items are generalized into two different categories. As seen on the Dòngwù Sēnlín page, there are 2 different lists of items:

  • The 1st list is all Doubutsu no Mori items that are considered to have been replaced by a completely brand-new item in Dòngwù Sēnlín. (For example, the deer scare in Doubutsu no Mori was replaced by a stone table in Dòngwù Sēnlín.)
  • The 2nd list is all items that are of an identical identity but have a minor design change between Doubutsu no Mori and Dòngwù Sēnlín. (For example, the red drum is essentially the same model but has altered text written upon it in Dòngwù Sēnlín.)

In the 2nd list, all of these items have identical stats (except for the "graffiti desk"/"desk with graffiti" and the "school desk"/"desk," which are 1x1 items in Doubutsu no Mori but are 2x1 items in Dòngwù Sēnlín). In the 1st list, however, it contains a mix of items. Not only does this list contain items altered in both design/size and stats, but it also contains items that have completely identical stats but are considered to hold a different identity; for example, although the Keiko figurine has no differences in stats whatsoever from the warrior with ceramic armor, they have been split into 2 different pages, since they hold a notable visual difference and name difference from each other to be considered unique in identity.

I strongly believe that this item page, "shogi board," should be split into 2 different pages: "shogi board" and "Go." I have to make this specific concession: from a basic, and even a thorough glance, there are almost no visual differences between the shogi board (File:Shogi Board DnM+ Model.png) and the Go (File:Shogi Board iQue Model.png). The only change is a small texture involving the small box that holds the chess pieces. However, it's clear they are meant to be different items in identity, because their Japanese and Chinese names are different.

The Japanese name, しょうぎばん (shougi ban), translates to "shogi board," while the Chinese name, 围棋, translates to "Go." Shogi is a Japanese game that is typically played on a 9x9 board with the objective to capture the opponent's king. Go is a Chinese game that is typically played on a 19x19 board with the objective to surround the opponent's pieces; although 19x19 is typical, there are also 13x13 and 9x9 boards for beginners or for quick games. Shogi and Go are not the same game at all, and thus they have different identities altogether. You can play checkers on a chess board, but that doesn't transform the identity of the game checkers into the game chess.

In New Leaf, there are even 2 very similar-looking items, the go board (File:Go Board NL Model.png) and the shogi board (File:Shogi Board NL Model.png). The go board even reappears in New Horizons, and the shogi board mysteriously does not make a reappearance. While I can only speculate why the designers of Dòngwù Sēnlín didn't put more effort into changing the model of the item for the first-generation games, it falls in line with how many of the Dòngwù Sēnlín items are poorly modeled as if much thought wasn't given to it otherwise. They still did put some effort into changing its identity with the texture change.

These are all of the reasons why I feel that the shogi board (DnM+) should be split from the Go (iQue):

  • The Japanese and Chinese names are different because these items have different identities. Shogi and Go are two different games.
  • There are already existing items between Doubutsu no Mori and Dòngwù Sēnlín that have been split into 2 different pages, despite their stats being identical.
  • Although the model for the "Go" is almost identical to the model of the "shogi board" in the first-generation games, even New Leaf contains 2 items (the shogi board and the go board) that are very similar in their model structures but are totally distinct in identity.

Support Support I fully agree for all the reasons you stated. Go makes it a different item from shogi. Chubby Bub (talk) 14:38, April 5, 2023 (EDT)
