A mailbox from Animal Crossing: City Folk

In every Animal Crossing series game, a red mailbox can be found outside the player's house. It is where Pete puts letters addressed to the player. When a letter arrives, a blue signal with a small blinking letter will appear on the right-top of the mailbox and will make a faint beeping sound when the player walks near it. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, a full mailbox will be indicated by faster beeping, and the mailbox will shake rapidly. Only the owner of the house can open the mailbox.

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, different forms of mailboxes are available to buy from Tom Nook at his new shop, Nook's Homes, in a variety of different styles and colors. New mailboxes cost 3,600 Bells. There are 21 different styles to choose from. Each style has a theme, such as Fairy Tale, Antique, or Trendy. When a player's mailbox is full, it will shake violently, beep very loudly, and the flap will snap open and shut. It will shake faster and faster the closer a player walks to it. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the player's mailbox shares a few traits with its New Leaf counterpart. However, depending on how many loans the player has paid off, they may be able to pick up the mailbox and place it wherever they'd like, even if it is not adjacent to their house. The mailbox can be grabbed from all sides, but it cannot be pushed or pulled in any way.

As letters are no longer stored in the player's inventory and there is no Post Office, the mailbox has a maximum capacity of 300 letters and is the only way to view any received mail. It may be opened at any time. If the maximum letter capacity is reached, letters must be thrown out before the player can receive any more. The letters can be filtered via the tabs along the top of the mailbox window, and the player can even favorite letters. Items ordered via Nook Shopping are stored in cardboard packages without an accompanying letter, and will free up their slot when taken out from the mailbox. The default mailbox is a wooden one, but once a certain number of loans have been paid off, the player may talk to Tom Nook at any time to order a new custom mailbox, which will replace the old mailbox the next day.
