An island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons during fall with mushrooms growing by the trees.

Mushrooms are items that appear during autumn in the Animal Crossing series. There are a variety of mushrooms, each worth different amounts of Bells according to their rarity. In addition to being selling items, in Animal Crossing: City Folk and Animal Crossing: New Leaf they may be an item from the Mushroom Series, and in Animal Crossing: New Horizons they can be used to craft items from the Mush Series.

Appearances

In Animal Crossing

In Doubutsu no Mori, Animal Crossing, and Doubutsu no Mori e+ there is only one type of mushroom, known simply as Mushroom. It is rare and can be found in the early morning during Mushrooming Season, from October 15 to 25, between 8 AM and 9 AM. At 8 AM, a Mushroom will spawn and remain for 15 minutes, after which a villager collects it and another Mushroom appears in another location. Each mushroom is worth 5,000 Bells. Despite appearing in Doubutsu no Mori, Mushrooms do not appear in the Japanese version of Animal Crossing.

In City Folk

In Animal Crossing: City Folk, there are five different types of mushrooms—Flat, Round, Skinny, Elegant, and Rare—appearing throughout the month of November. During November, six mushrooms spawn throughout the town each day. One of the six mushrooms will be a piece of the Mushroom Series disguised as a mushroom. Rare Mushrooms only appear if the town has attained perfect status, buried underground. Players may either sell or eat mushrooms they find.

In New Leaf

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, mushrooms can be found near tree stumps during autumn and, like in City Folk, can be an item from the Mushroom Series. In addition to the five mushrooms found in City Folk is the Famous Mushroom, valued at 16,000 Bells. Once eaten, the Famous Mushroom, which is designed after a Super Mushroom from the Super Mario series, will cause the player to temporarily grow in a fashion similar to Mario when collecting a Super Mushroom. Rare Mushrooms may only be found buried underground near trees and tree stumps once a perfect town rating has been earned.

In New Horizons

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, mushrooms are crafting materials that can be found near hardwood and cedar trees during November in the Northern Hemisphere, and during May in the Southern Hemisphere. The Round, Skinny, and Flat, and Elegant Mushrooms can be found on the ground, while Rare Mushrooms can be found buried underground.

Five mushrooms will appear per day until a limit of 30 is reached, after which new ones will stop growing. They do not appear on mystery islands.

Trivia

  • The appearance of each standard mushroom in the Animal Crossing series resembles a mushroom in the real-world:
    • Round Mushrooms resemble agaricus bisporus, also known as the common or button mushroom.
    • Elegant Mushrooms resemble shiitake, though in New Horizons they are redesigned and more closely resemble matsutake.
    • Skinny Mushrooms resemble enokitake, also known as velvet shank.
    • Flat Mushrooms resemble pleurotus, also known as oyster mushrooms.
    • Rare Mushrooms resemble truffles, and similarly are only found buried in the ground.
  • The design of the Famous Mushroom in New Leaf is based on a Super Mushroom from the Super Mario series.
