Revamping

This is getting silly.

Decided to boot this project back up; our fish, bug, and especially fossil pages need a lot of love.

To start it off, I'll be working on writing out the standards (a la Project Villager) for our fish, bugs, and fossils. As I work on this I'm proposing the following changes:

• A given: update infoboxes to match the style of Template:Infobox Villager.
• Rename "Encyclopedia information" to "Catch details"; details such as habitat and season are game-specific, not real-world-specific. The "Further information" actually serves as the encyclopedic information.
• Inside of "Encyclopedia information", we have templates like Template:FishInfoWW, which hold basic data (size, habitat, season). We need to:
  • Update the styling.
  • Move Selling Price + Catchphrases into it.
  • After moving Catchphrases into it, we should get rid of the giant hatnote of catchphrases at the top of each article, leaving only the NH catchphrase.
• For easy referencing, the infobox should only show NH details (that's all people are looking for now anyway). As mentioned above, selling price + location from previous games will be able to be accessed in the "Catch details" section.
• We should swap the order of the "Donating to the Museum" and "Encyclopedia Information" sections. Readers will care more about the picture, habitat, and season more than Blather's description.

I think that when all the catch details have been added, we should trim the infobox right down to just the scientific names and game appearances. I don't see why it needs to still have New Horizons details given they'll be in the "catch details" section, and therefore will be duplicate. Drago (talk) 11:54, May 23, 2020 (EDT)

I agree! It will also make pages easier to update.

Also regarding the infobox - not sure if you are thinking about Sea Creatures - they have their own category (New Leaf deep sea creatures / some are still only in the Deep sea creatures category) so it doesn't work with the infobox as the infobox checks for category "game fish". I think it should look for "game fish" OR "game sea creatures" as all the New Leaf's sea creatures that also appear in Pocket Camp are classified as fish in Pocket Camp. Fish/bug info templates

Just a quick question: why did we not create fish/bug info templates for Doubutsu no Mori and Doubutsu no Mori e+? Drago (talk) 12:47, June 14, 2020 (EDT)

Not sure if there are differences between Doubutsu no Mori and Animal Crossing regarding critters? Doubutsu no Mori e+ one should definitely be made sometime as there were new critters introduced. I would say the reason was that the info wasn't already for the articles, while all the other catch details were there in some form. Paviinka(Message me!) 12:59, June 14, 2020 (EDT)

Removing scientific name and family from infoboxes

I propose that we remove the "scientific name" and "family" parameters from Template:Infobox Bug, Template:Infobox Fish, and Template:Infobox Sea Creature because they are unnecessary and unofficial. Having this information in the infobox may lead readers into thinking that data comes from the games or Nintendo, when it does not, and since it's unofficial it is of little use to readers in the first place. While we're on the subject of Zoology terms, I believe we should do the same for Template:Infobox Species, as, like what AlexBot said, they're not official nor do they have much use to readers. If we really wanna keep the scientific stuff, then why not just make a "Further information" section like how we do with the non-anthro creatures? I've thought about it back and forth, and I think I would Oppose the removal of that info for now.

In my view the purpose of the infobox is to be a quick summary/overview of facts and statistics from the whole article, and in this case that also includes the real-world information section. If that information isn't deemed necessary, then that begs the question of why we should even have that section at all. On the matter of how useful the information is, I'm not convinced that it's "of little use" simply because that's a very difficult metric to measure in the context of how individual readers might value it. Anecdotally I've seen multiple users over time who have taken in interest in these fields, so evidently some of our readers/users find value in them to an indeterminate degree. Perhaps a better solution would be to rename it to something like "real-world classification", since that would more appropriately convey the nature of the info and also connect it with the relevant section of the article.

Regarding villager species articles, I think expanding them with a section on real-world information would be a great idea, and perhaps we could simplify the species infobox alongside that. -- Dorsal Axe (talk) 09:04, September 18, 2020 (EDT)

 Oppose I agree with Dorsal Axe that the infobox should reflect the information in the article as a whole, so if the real-world classification were to go, then I think that justifies the article section going as well, which I think is unnecessary. I agree with renaming the descriptor for these terms as something like 'real-world classification' as Dorsal Axe suggested. Perhaps we can condense their display in the infobox as well, so the label reads 'real-world classification' and then the value reads Species: Abc <br> Family: Xyz (both of these values appearing in the same box instead of two labeled boxes). We could also consider moving the information further down the infobox to mirror the real-world info's location at the bottom of the article. (talk) 11:34, September 19, 2020 (EDT)

I just wanted to note that I made an edit to {{Infobox Fish}} to minimize the space taken up by the scientific name & family information, and changed the heading to 'Real-world info' to mirror the section name for this info at the bottom of the article page.
