Pitfall Seeds, often shortened to just Pitfalls, are items in the Animal Crossing series. A player can bury it, at which point it will look like any other buried item, then when a villager or player walks on where it was buried, they will fall into it. However, characters like Tortimer and Joan are "immune" to them. The player who falls in can get out by rapidly tapping any button. Pitfalls are uncommon in Animal Crossing, but in Wild World and City Folk, they are common.

If the player buries a pitfall seed and pushes a neighbor in, they will appear shocked. If you speak to them, while they are trapped, they will probably shout, and jump out. This will cause them to become very angry after escaping. There is a very rare chance the neighbor will be so mad he or she will decide to leave town. A second use for pitfall seeds are as presents; place them in letters written to your neighbors and in return they will send you a present. When unburied, pitfall seeds have the appearance of a white sphere with a large red exclamation point in the center on both sides.

There are three ways in which you can obtain pitfall seeds: found already buried in a town with one or two added everyday along with fossils, collected from the lost and found run by Booker at the Town Gate, or found in the recycling bin in your town hall. Tom Nook doesn't buy pitfall seeds from you; instead, he offers to throw it away.

When thrown, if the opponent is on the ground, they are buried for a short time. If the opponent is in the air and the Pitfall Seed hits, they are "spiked" (shot directly downward). Or, if thrown and it lands on the ground, it appears to vanish in a series of sparks, then, when an opponent, or the thrower walks over the place were the Pitfall "vanished" they will be buried.
