When dug up, it reveals a bag of [[Bell]]s. Bells can also be buried in shining soil for the chance of growing a [[money tree]]. Shining soil first appeared in {{DnM}}, and after {{DnMe+}} it remained absent from the series until {{NH}}.

In {{PG}}, shining spots appear daily in a random acre and normally contain 1,000 Bells. If the player has money [[luck]] from [[fêng shui]], the spot can instead contain 10,000 or 30,000 Bells. The higher the player's money luck, the greater the chance of finding 10,000 or 30,000 Bells, and with high enough money luck, the player will only find 10,000 or 30,000 Bells. Money luck from [[Katrina]]'s fortune guarantees that the player will find 30,000 Bells.

If the player buries a bag of Bells in a shining spot, a tree will begin to grow and may be a [[money tree]] containing, instead of [[fruit]], three bags worth the same as the amount buried. The higher the player's money luck, the greater the chance that the tree will be a money tree. Because the largest Bell bag is 30,000 Bells, the most valuable possible money tree can provide 90,000 Bells total, for a net profit of 60,000 Bells.

Additionally, if the player buries a {{I|shovel|PG}} in a shining spot, it will grow into a tree with golden leaves that drops a {{I|golden shovel|PG}} the first time it is shaken.

There is a unique shining spot each day for each of the four players living in town, as well as one for visitors.

In {{NH}}, shining soil has been redesigned to be more subtle, and it appears in a random location on the player's island each day and contains 1,000 Bells. If the player buries Bells in a shining spot, a money tree will grow. The player can earn up to three times the amount buried by doing this.

Starting in version [[Animal_Crossing:_New_Horizons/Update_history/2.0|2.0]], shining soil can be affected if the player receives a fortune from [[Katrina]]. If the player receives good money luck, the shining soil will contain 5,000 Bells, but receiving bad money luck causes it not to appear at all.
