Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[nb 1] is a fighting game for the Nintendo Switch released worldwide on December 7, 2018. It is the fifth installment in the Super Smash Bros. series (sixth if Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U are counted as separate).

All previous playable Super Smash Bros. characters return in this installment, alongside numerous newcomers. Seven new stages are in the game, with more being added via DLC. In addition to this, over 90 past stages from previous games return as well.

The game features several gameplay changes from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, such as faster launch speeds, the return of directional air dodging, new perfect shield mechanics, and overall faster gameplay. It also introduced numerous new modes, including Spirits and the World of Light adventure mode.

Villager

Artwork of Villager from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Villager returns from their appearance in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U as with every previous fighter from the Super Smash Bros. series, with changes made in their expressions and color appearance. They can now see what item they pocketed from using their neutral move. Two of their alternate costumes have also changed, as their last two alternate costumes now feature darker skin, unlike the previous titles.

Besides these appearance changes, Villager remains mostly the same from their appearance in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, with minor buffs and nerfs. Villager is classified as Fighter #45.

Special moves
Move Image Description
Pocket SSBU Neutral B Villager.png Villager's neutral special. Any projectiles that are thrown in front of Villager are grabbed and pocketed. If pressed again, Villager either grabs the projectile in their hand to be able to throw it for later or immediately throw it. Status items such as Superspicy Curry and recovery items such as Food will immediately be used.
Lloid Rocket SSBU Side B Villager.png Villager's side special. They summon a rocket resembling the design of Lloid which will shoot forward to hit any players. Villager can also ride on the rocket as a horizontal recovery move.
Balloon Trip SSBU Up B Villager.png Villager's up special. Based on the Nintendo video game Balloon Fight, Villager will take to the sky using two balloons color-coded to the player's color. It can be used for a certain amount of time before Villager falls from the sky. Other fighter can attack the balloons to prevent Villager from their recovery.
Timber SSBU Down B Villager Extra.pngSSBU Down B Villager.png Villager's down special. Villager first plants a sapling, then uses a Watering Can to grow the sapling to a tree, and the Villager pulls out an Axe to chop down the tree, which when dropped deals damage to other nearby fighters. The Watering Can can be used to push fighters away from the player, while the Axe can deal significant damage to others.

On occasion, the chopped tree may drop a woodchip will drop for additional, but weak damage, and fruits for the player to recovery their damage.

Dream Home SSBU Final Smash Villager.png Villager's Final Smash. Villager traps a fighter and calls forth Tom Nook and the Nooklings, who after paying them with Bells builds a house around the fighter. The jingle for completing a home loan from New Leaf is played shortly after the house is built. Then, the house explodes, dealing high knockback and damage to both the trapped fighter and any bystanders.

Unlock requirements
  • Every ten minutes, a new challenger will appear in a specific order. Villager is the 6th fighter to be unlocked.
  • To unlock Villager in Classic Mode, the player must complete Classic Mode under Pikachu's branch.
  • To unlock Villager in World of Light, the player has to fight Villager on the left-hand side of the crossroad during the beginning of the mode. If Villager is freed, the other fighters (Marth and Sheik) will have to unlocked after clearing a boss.

Isabelle

Artwork of Isabelle from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Isabelle is a new fighter introduced in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, having been upgraded from Assist Trophy status from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. She is a semi-clone of Villager, but is not classified as an Echo Fighters, the term used to described clones in Ultimate. Although her Final Smash and neutral special function identical to that of Villager, her other moves do not.

Other aspects of Isabelle have been modified to differentiate herself from Villager. Her neutral attack uses a Toy Hammer to hit her opponents. Her forward smash fires a Party Popper and her up smash summons a Do-not-enter Sign.

Although Isabelle speaks Animalese in her reveal trailer, she is completely mute in this game. Isabelle is classified as Fighter #68.

Special moves
Move Image Description
Pocket SSBU Neutral B Isabelle.png Isabelle's neutral special. It acts very similarly mechanically to Villager's neutral special, where any projectiles thrown are grabbed and stored by Isabelle. She can then use the move again to use the projectile to harm the fighter, or immediately throw it back. Consumables like the Superspicy Curry and Food are used when the move is pressed.
Fishing Rod SSBU Side B Isabelle.png Isabelle's side special. She summons a Fishing Rod that will catch any fighter which she will immediately throw forward. Previously, the move allowed duplication of Assist Trophies. This was patched in version 2.0.0.
Balloon Trip SSBU Up B Isabelle.png Isabelle's up special. She sits on a wooden platform and glides upwards with two Bunny Balloons color-coded to the player's color. Her version of Balloon Trip is much shorter than that of Villager's.
Lloid Trap SSBU Down B Isabelle.png Isabelle's down special. She digs a rocket resembling Lloid in the ground, and any fighters that step on the trap will cause the fighter to be launched upwards. The move is akin to a projectile, meaning another Isabelle can pocket one's Lloid Trap and use the move against them.
Dream Town Hall SSBU Final Smash Isabelle.png Isabelle's Final Smash. She traps any fighter close-by and summons Tom Nook and the Nooklings to build a Town Hall. After paying them, Tom Nook and Nooklings quickly build the Town Hall, after which the jingle from New Leaf after completing a home loan plays. The Town Hall immediately explodes afterward, launching the trapped fighter and any other fighters that were nearby. The move deals more damage than Villager's Final Smash.

Unlock requirements
  • Every ten minutes, a new challenger will appear in a specific order. Isabelle is the 21st fighter to be unlocked.
  • To unlock Isabelle in Classic Mode, the player must complete Classic Mode under Pikachu's branch.
  • To unlock Isabelle in World of Light, the player must have the spirit of Kapp'n (Wild World) to be able to ride in the Bus to her unlock stage. Once Isabelle is freed, a simple path is made to the town.

Stages

Smashville, Tortimer Island, and Town and City all make a reappearance in this installment. All stages are now able to be turned into Battlefield and Ω forms. These forms turn the stage's geometry into that of Battlefield and Final Destination respectively. A function that turns off stage hazards is also present, which changes some of the properties of most stages, including all of the Animal Crossing stages.

Items

The Beehive and Pitfall seed make their return from the previous installment. The fruit that grows on Tortimer Island and the wood chip produced from Villager's down special also return.

Additionally, Kapp'n is one of the many new additions to the roster of characters that appear as an Assist Trophy. When summoned, he will get in his bus and drive across the stage, occasionally jumping up into the air. Kapp'n will pick up any fighters that get in his way, and take them past the blast lines, resulting in a K.O.

Music

The Animal Crossing series has received four new songs in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, each of which, including previous songs, can now be used on any Animal Crossing stage.

  • "Town Hall and Tom Nook's Store - Animal Crossing: Wild World" – A combination of the town hall theme from Wild World and Tom Nook's theme in the Animal Crossing series.
  • "Title Theme - Animal Crossing: Wild World (Brawl)" – Although the title suggests it is an arrangement of the main title theme of Wild World, it is a medley of pieces that are present in Wild World that not only includes the main theme, but also the museum theme, the 3 PM theme, the jingle after a home loan is played, the 6 AM theme, the Town Hall theme during daylight hours, and Nook's Cranny theme. It was previous
  • "2:00 a.m. - Animal Crossing: Wild World" – Based on K.K.'s rendition of the 2 AM theme from Animal Crossing Sound CD: K.K. Choice! Mix, it is an upbeat remix of the 2 AM from Wild World.
  • "Go K.K. Rider!" – A remix of the aforementioned K.K. Slider song, sounding orchestrated and containing motorbike revs.

K.K. Performance

As with Brawl and Smash 4, K.K. Slider will perform from 8 PM to midnight on Smashville and Town and City, playing each of the following tracks.

    Current version:
    Ver. 13.0.1 (released December 1, 2021)

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has received periodic updates throughout its lifespan, adding new fighters, stages, music and spirits to the game (as part of DLC), as well as any features and balance changes. Villager and Isabelle have received various changes to their damage input and gameplay. They have also received bug fixes to their gameplay, such as a glitch where Villager's slingshot bullet, if pocketed continuously between another Villager or Isabelle, will eventually cause the game to crash.

Online multiplayer for arenas, tourneys, and gameplay match-ups can only be done if the most recent update is installed.
