Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is an upcoming fighting game for the Nintendo Switch. Announced in a teaser trailer at the end of a Nintendo Direct on March 8th, 2018, the game is set to release on December 7th, 2018. It will be fifth installment in the Super Smash Bros. series (sixth if both versions of Super Smash Bros. 4 are counted as separate).
At E3 2018, it was confirmed that all previous playable Super Smash Bros. characters are returning. Five new stages were confirmed to be in the game. In addition to this, over 70 past stages were confirmed to return. The game features several gameplay changes from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U such as the return of directional air dodging, Wavelanding, new perfect shield mechanics, and overall faster gameplay.

Playable characters
As the game features all previous playable characters, Villager has returned. Villager is nearly identical in appearance to his iteration in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, but features a more subdued color scheme and several animation changes. Villager received several gameplay changes including the ability to see pocketed items and the ability to pocket items using the net.
Stages
Smashville, Tortimer Island, and Town and City have all been confirmed to be returning. All stages are now able to be turned into Battlefield and Ω forms. These forms turn the stage's geometry into that of Battlefield and Final Destination respectively. A function that turns off stage hazards was also announced, but it has not yet been confirmed what changes will be made to the three Animal Crossing stages.
Items
The beehive is confirmed to be returning from the previous installment. The fruit that grows on Tortimer Island and the wood chip produced from Villager's down special are also confirmed to be returning.
