Talk:Forgery/New Horizons

I'm looking at the Jolly Painting on Redd's trawler right now, and it doesn't match the Genuine image in this table. There is still a yellow flower, but it has different leaves. Additionally, the pea pod making up the mouth is turned downwards instead of upwards. I think there may be multiple fakes of this painting, and possibly other paintings as well. Screenshot would be great - there has been talk about multiple fakes, however, I don't think I've seen a screenshot that wasn't cropped or something. The data in this table were datamined, so it's a little harder to believe that there are multiples, if there is only one ID for the fakes. Personally, the fakes I've had in the game were the same as the ones listed. I'm assuming you're talking about the Jolly Painting. I had this one today as well and the flower was missing. But I suppose everything is possible? I know that people are sometimes confusing NL/NH fakes when seen on the internet but that doesn't sound like your situation.. --Paviinka(Message me!) 18:48, April 26, 2020 (EDT)

Yeah, it's known that there are a few paintings that have several fakes. The Graceful Painting is another one; there's one fake where she's missing the white collar of her kimono, and another where she's looking the opposite way. However, it seems to be unique per save file (like the color variations of items in the Nook Stop), so there's been some difficulty getting a proper list of them. Thanks for your info, though! That is so interesting though - how does it work? How is it possible that you don't have all the data available? Does your "fake id" switch when visiting other islands? Does the visit trigger a download of the textures? You have to have them all, because if you wouldn't, the moment you receive a painting bought somewhere else, it would look different to the one purchased? Coding magic, huh. I'm not super sure? I know it was discussed on the Discord. Internally, there's only one ID for fake works of art as opposed to real ones, so it must be something to do with how the game sorts out its textures, yeah. Maybe the flag to determine which variation it uses is stored somewhere else? I wouldn't know, myself. StrawberryChan (talk) 19:24, April 26, 2020 (EDT)

Okay, so, I've just watched this video from Nintendo Life about Redd, and the example NL uses when discussing fakes is the Jolly Painting. Their version marked "Real" (comparison at 3:58) is the version I saw in my game-- here's my screenshot on Google Drive. Alrighty, I know what's up - we don't have the screenshots/textures for the real paintings as they appear in the game - what you see in the table is the real painting, as it appears in real world. You can kinda see in the in-game icon here that the leaves don't appear as they do in real life; they're the same as in your game. here is the in-game icon for the fake. Most of the paintings don't have such subtle differences. It's something obvious at first, third glance. That being said, can I upload your screenshot cropped to the site/could you? Thanks! Ah, right, okay. So the game's real paintings aren't guaranteed to look exactly like real life's real paintings, that's interesting. You absolutely have my permission to crop my screenshot and upload it, I'd also suggest noting at the top of this forgery table that the game's real paintings may have differences from the real-world paintings as well so people don't get confused like I did. (edit conflict) I did some research, and it appears the in-game New Horizons version is closer to the original article than the example we currently have on the wiki; there appears to be multiple iterations of the piece with subtle differences. Scary Painting

Hey! I got the scary painting on Redd's boat and it shows his eyes like the real one but he's smiling? But the screenshot for the fake makes him look suprised/sad. Is there multiple fakes or only one? - unsigned comment from Sakura0824 (talk • contribs)

As far as I know, there is only one fake. I can't really help you with this, sorry.
