Appearances section

I'm not too fond of the addition of abbreviations and how the film is lumped in between them. I prefer the old version where it lists the name of the game; it's more neat that way. Mario Signature.png 18:48, August 1, 2014 (EDT)

Switching to abbreviations was a part of our attempts to keep the box shorter when we added more information to it; "Appearances" was the longest section of the box and the game abbreviations are fairly common, so getting them into fewer lines was a good way to save space. Since the box is still as long as many of the villager articles--primary villagers new in NL--I'd want to avoid lengthening it anymore, at least until we get some more information into them with the new template (although there is a small chance that we'll run into horizontal space issues between that and long infoboxes).
Infobox length issues aside, I'm not especially fond of how the appearances template is set up, but I'm not sure how much can be done without adding more lines to it. I agree with you regarding the film, but there's not much that could be done with it with the current setup. One option could be taking "Appearances" out of the infobox and adding an appearances list as a section at the bottom of villager articles, like how character appearances are sometimes listed on wikis for TV shows. That'd show that the movie is a movie more clearly where applicable, but that setup may not look good for villagers that only appeared in one game. -Sky (talk) 20:54, August 1, 2014 (EDT)
If we remove the appearances section, I would like to place in a "first appearance" section. (This should not be interpreted as an opinion on the appearance section). ~~SuperAlpaca (talk) 20:58, August 1, 2014 (EDT)
Quick idea (maybe awful?): if we had a "first appearance" field, we could use just that in the infobox and add an appearances heading to the article for villagers that had 2+ appearances. -Sky (talk) 21:01, August 1, 2014 (EDT)
I wouldn't like that idea in articles based on special characters, but that's my opinion. --XXSuperXXNintendoXx (talk) 21:05, August 1, 2014 (EDT)
I agree with Mario in that I found it odd/confusing for the film to lumped in with the game abbreviations. Additionally, I think it odd that we abbreviate the Japan-only titles as AF, AF+, & AFe+ when the page titles use the rōmaji (Dōbutsu no Mori) not the translated names. I suppose that may have been done so as to be able to use DM as the abbreviation for the movie... but still. :P I would suggest making a field for "In-game appearances:" and "Other media:" as there's also some Animal Crossing manga I believe. The "other media" field would only appear if you entered anything into that field. Also Sky, if you're worried about the length of the infobox, remember that the villager's skill and goal are included in the other template you were creating with the coffee preferences, favorites etc. So we can remove them from the infobox when that's done. --sunmarsh (talk) 21:44, August 1, 2014 (EDT)
The abbreviations were chosen to match the link templates; admittedly this is more convenient for editors than readers, so I wouldn't necessarily mind changing that. The movie abbreviation was picked last-minute, and DM was chosen over AM (its link template) with the assumption that people would more commonly know it by its Japanese title.
I'm concerned with the length without any new information added; it's seeming like that's just me, though, so I can let it be if other people don't mind. Nonetheless, if we're going to differentiate between appearance media, I'd rather do that outside the infobox. -Sky (talk) 22:03, August 1, 2014 (EDT)

Parameters

I'm concerned about moving the appearance parameters into this template rather than having a separate template typed in, which was somewhat more flexible. The former setup's code could be more easily compacted on villager pages and allowed the old style of appearance lists to stay visible for infoboxes that haven't yet been updated.

Incidentally, the star sign wasn't given its own row in the table before as part of trying to keep the box relatively short. I think having it by the birthday was decent context, but I suppose it does make sense in its own cell. -Sky (talk) 20:54, August 1, 2014 (EDT)

Broken template

When this template is on villager pages, the insides of the boxes appear black to me, making the information inside them near-impossible to read. Is the template broken? Red (snappity snap snap!) Red Snapper WW Sprite.png 06:15, August 20, 2015 (EDT)

Can you screenshot a page that displays the error? I just checked a villager page and it displays fine for me. Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 10:10, August 20, 2015 (EDT)
Strange. I recall updating Phil not too long ago, and if everything's right, then the page didn't have any issues. Mario Signature.png 16:08, August 20, 2015 (EDT)
See the file I uploaded. Sorry for the horrible quality image, but I had to use a camera since I don't know how to operate the screenshot-taking function. :P As you can see, some of the template appears fine, but the 'Birthday' section and those below it are very difficult to read. Not a big deal for me, but might as well bring it to everyone's attention. Red (snappity snap snap!) Red Snapper WW Sprite.png 06:47, August 21, 2015 (EDT)
Thanks for the screenshot! It was actually very helpful and I think I've solved the problem now. Let me know though. The black areas were using HTML code to change the background while the white ones were using CSS. I changed everything to CSS so we should be good. Initial Umbrella

Do we really need the "Initial Umbrella" section? The only page that I know uses it is Peanut. Should we remove it? Bones aF Villager Icon.png Thedarkcave --Talk Page-- 11:46, March 4, 2019 (EST)

I guess it is a unique characteristic of each villager, but it's an extremely unimportant one. I'd support removing it. Drago (talk) Drago PC Villager Icon.png 12:59, March 4, 2019 (EST)
Should I get rid of it then? Bones aF Villager Icon.png TDCbox.png TDCtalk.png 16:47, March 4, 2019 (EST)
Go ahead! :) Drago (talk) Drago PC Villager Icon.png 13:11, March 5, 2019 (EST)
Can you tag any pages using it with the outdated infobox template? (Just incase there's any I forgot) Bones aF Villager Icon.png TDCbox.png TDCtalk.png 15:54, March 5, 2019 (EST)
I went ahead and added this to the template (I think it should work). --Ok (talk) 16:29, March 5, 2019 (EST)

Add umbrellas?

Umbrella data functionality has been restored to the template. HylianAngel (talk) 06:12, December 25, 2022 (EST)

Should an umbrella parameter be added to this template? It looks like the parameter used to exist at one point, but it was removed because not very many villager pages utilized it due to lack of data. But now the wiki has comprehensive data of villager umbrellas in all mainline games, so I think it should definitely be added back. Some additional notes:

  • Literally the only game villagers don't own umbrellas in is the spin-off game, Pocket Camp. They own umbrellas in all mainline games, and even the spin-off games, Happy Home Designer and amiibo Festival.
  • Frog villagers won't take out their umbrellas in New Leaf, Happy Home Designer, and New Horizons, but they still own umbrellas in those games (and the ones chosen for them thematically fit well). Information on that unique frog behavior can be included in the form of a note, similar to how clothing notes exist.
    • In New Leaf and New Horizons, even though frog villagers do not use umbrellas, it's known that they "own" umbrellas due to datamining.
    • In Happy Home Designer, even though frog villagers do not use umbrellas, it's known that they "own" default umbrellas, because all villagers in Happy Home Designer unlock their default clothing top and umbrella upon starting their house request, unless said items were unlocked at an earlier point. These specific unlocks are identical to their default clothing and umbrella in New Leaf; the only 2 villagers who contradict this are Claude and Maddie, non-frog villagers who were DLC in Happy Home Designer and were not in version 1.0 of New Leaf.
  • In amiibo Festival, frog villagers use umbrellas if it's raining, even though the game was released after New Leaf and Happy Home Designer. HylianAngel (talk) 19:03, March 6, 2022 (EST), edited again on 00:55, December 24, 2022 (EST)

If people are neutral about this topic, I will go ahead and add the umbrellas to their infoboxes eventually (when I have free time). HylianAngel (talk) 06:31, April 4, 2022 (EDT)
