In Doubutsu no Mori, Animal Crossing, and Doubutsu no Mori e+, villagers will occasionally post on the bulletin board that they have buried an item in a specific acre. The buried item has a 33% chance of being either an item from Crazy Redd's, and item from the lottery, or a Pitfall. The item will remain in town forever until it is dug up.

Treasure hunts occur at random, and there is a minimum gap of three days between hunts.

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, villagers may ask the player to partake in a treasure hunt, initiating a timed minigame where the player begins in the plaza and must find a buried present on the island. If the player digs up the present and returns it to the villager within the time limit, they will unwrap it and give the player the item inside.
