Trees will grow around the player's town in the Animal Crossing series. They can also be bought at all of Tom Nook's stores after the initial remodeling, whereby they can be planted and grown. Not all trees grow successfully, however, due to poor quality soil. Although, planting a lucky clover next to the sapling increases your chances. If you plant a tree where a different tree was cut down then it will definitely grow. The number of trees will affect the environment of a town. A sustained good environment will allow the player to receive the Golden Watering Can as a reward. Fully grown trees do not die.

Sometimes there will be items in trees, such as furniture or Bells. To get them out, the player must shake the tree. A beehive may also fall out of the tree once shaken, accompanied by a swarm. The swarm of bees chases the player until the player is stung, the player enters a building, or the bees are caught in a net. Other insects may be found in or on trees, depending on the season or time of day. You can only find items in oak trees and cedar trees.

Non-fruit-bearing trees turn pink during the Cherry Blossom Festival. They are laden with snow during winter and turn brown in autumn. If a player stays up until 6am and stands on a tree sapling at exactly 6am, the tree will grow under them and knock the player out.

In Template:AC3, trees have their appearance radically changed, and look more realistic.

Cedar Tree

These trees are evergreen trees, similar to pine trees in real life. At Christmas time and New Year they get decorated with bright lights. Cedar trees will only grow in the north of your village, reflecting the fact that their real-life counterparts are native to mountains.

Oak Tree

The generic 'tree', it resembles a fruit tree but actually doesn't bear fruit. It can be shaken for beehives, bags of Bells and furniture. These trees turn brown in the autumn, and also get covered with snow in the winter. They can bear cherry blossoms during April.

Fruit Tree

Trees baring fruit

This tree bears fruit, three at a time. During the Acorn Festival they also bear acorns. There are 5 different kinds of fruit trees, one for each type of fruit available in-game. A player is able to receive a piece of non-native fruit in letters from Mom or from other villagers. After which they can then be grown into a fruit-bearing tree. Bells cannot be shaken out of empty fruit trees.

Coconut Palm

Main article: Coconut Palm

This tree can only bear coconuts, two of them. This tree can only be planted near the beach, and can only be grown from a coconut arriving on the player's shore. Alternative names include palms or palm trees. There are some beetles that only appear in palm trees.

Coconuts usually come around at least once a week. In Animal Crossing, coconuts can only be obtained by visiting the island using a Game Boy Advance.

Money Tree

A rare tree that bears money as its fruit. They can be grown by burying bells in the ground with a golden shovels. See the main article for more info. To maximize potential return and minimize expected loss, the player should bury 30,000 bells.

Golden Tree

This tree only appears in Animal Crossing, where golden shovels grow from it. It is a golden color. They are grown by planting a shovel in a shining spot that appears once a day in the players village.
