Hacking in the Animal Crossing series involves the manipulation of gameplay in a way other than permitted in a game's original programming. By using codes and following some other methods, hackers can perform a variety of things to play around with the game, including, but not limited to:

  • Being able to add any object to the inventory, including unobtainable objects.
  • Gain any amount of Bells in their inventory, and in the savings account.
  • Stop the grass from deteriorating (in City Folk).
  • Change the layout of their town.
  • Create hacked villagers or custom villagers.
  • Create custom objects and HDLC.
  • Jump, and therefore reach inaccessible areas, such as the top of cliffs.

Cross-game modifications

The following programs, modifications, and devices work throughout many titles in the Animal Crossing series.

  • Edit all player's houses, the private island, and the patterns they carry.
  • Complete or clear all collections at the museum, all encyclopedias, emotion slots, the store's catalog, and the song library.

Physical game modification devices

A physical game modification device is a device used to manipulate gameplay in a way other than permitted in a game's original programming or load backed up saves. Examples of popular cheating devices used with Animal Crossing include the Action Replay line of devices produced by Datel and the GameShark line produced by MadCatz. These devices exist for every platform with an Animal Crossing game, with the exception of the Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.

Devices for the Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, and Nintendo DS feature codes that can be input to manipulate game data. Devices for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo 3DS do not feature codes, but instead feature the ability to load backed up game saves.
