Zen-style housing[edit]

Hi there! I was wondering how you're determining which houses go in the "Zen-Style House Exterior" category. Is this in-game data, or are you just adding houses that you think have a zen look to them? If the latter: ideally we shouldn't have subjective categories like that, where we decide what looks zen and what doesn't. A better solution might be to categorize by roof style and siding style separately. ~SuperHamster Talk 12:22, September 30, 2020 (EDT)

Hi! I'm adding in houses that have the irimoya roof model. I don't know what it's called in the game assets unfortunately so that's why I went with the name zen-style, following the naming convention used in previous AC games. Is that okay? --Reynbowz (talk) 12:34, September 30, 2020 (EDT)

Ahh I see! I was thinking you were categorizing by texture, but you're just going off of the model/shape. I'll check what the other staff think, but in the meantime I think it's fine and you can keep doing what you're doing. I went ahead and renamed the category to Category:Villagers with a zen-style house exterior in New Horizons - it's wordy but more accurate.
Later, what I can also do is update Template:House Info with an "Exterior Model Style" field so that we can store the info in the template (which can also take care of categorizing). Also let me know if you have ideas on what to call the other exterior styles. ~SuperHamster Talk 13:15, September 30, 2020 (EDT)

Awesome, sounds good! I've been working on trying to find the asset files so we can use the actual in-game names but struggling. Do you know where those asset files could be found? In the meantime, there seems to be 5 non-zen roof models: gathered straw, hip roof with triangular gable, hip roof with curved gable, conical stair stepped roof with thin chimney, conical stair stepped roof with thick chimney. Those are wordy description and prolly not ideal for names so hopefully the villager house assets are available somewhere. Also, I noticed there are actually three "flying eaves" (飞檐) roof models (flying eave roof with chimney and pebbles, flying eave roof with chimney and no pebbles, flying eave roof with ridge decoration) but I grouped the three together under the name "zen-style". Should we separate them or keep them together? --Reynbowz (talk) 07:36, October 1, 2020 (EDT)

Hey there, sorry for the late response. So it turns out there are names in the game files for each style of roof, door, and siding. We also have house data for each villager that I believe maps to those styles. What I'm thinking we could do is add roof-type, roof-color, siding-type, siding-color, door-type, and door-color parameters to the house template. I can then write a script that goes through and populates the data for all the villagers. After that we'd be able to create tables and/or categories for each of the door/siding/roof styles. What do you think? ~SuperHamster Talk 12:19, October 5, 2020 (EDT)

Hey, sorry for late response as I just saw this. I think what you've found are the files for player houses rather than villager houses. Several styles that villagers can have seem to be unavailable to players, notably the irimoya roofs I was referring to before. I looked through the links you gave and the names seem to match the Nook Inc catalogue styles - eg., for players there are 4 siding styles (common, chalet, cobblestone, stucco), whereas for villagers there are several more (logs, steel with rivets, stick frame, stucco with two logs, square stucco, rounded stucco, adobe, brick, overlapped clapboard with trim, eastern with cobblestone base, eastern with vertical planks, eastern with round window). Since neither of us could find the file names, do you wanna go with made-up names until further notice? Unless you know people who can datamine that info? --Reynbowz (talk) 04:24, October 20, 2020 (EDT)
