Weeds in the Animal Crossing series resemble small clumps of grass that change color according to the seasons. Three (two in Animal Crossing: City Folk and Animal Crossing: New Leaf) new weeds appear in the player's town each day. They do not necessarily have to be pulled up, but will affect the town's environment and forgetting to pull out the weeds will result in the appearance of a rafflesia, a large, red flower which attracts flies and further lowering the environment rating. Weeds are also contaminants as they will lower the chance of flowers breeding.

If the player does not play for a long time, the town will be overrun with weeds. In Animal Crossing and Animal Crossing: City Folk, Wisp can pull all weeds in town after the player completes his task. And in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Leif eventually offers a weed-pulling service (enacting the Beautiful Town ordinance also prevents many weeds from appearing). But in Animal Crossing: Wild World, the player(s) in town will have to pull all weeds by themselves. To pull a weed, the player must press the Y button when near it (in Animal Crossing: New Leaf)

Another form of weed is the clover, which appears as four clover plants which appear two by two in one grid. However, clovers may result in a four-leaf clover when pulled out from the ground. A four-leaf clover is an item which can be worn in the player's hair or placed in the player's house as a clover stuck to the page of a book.

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Weeds are overhauled. They now come in various shapes in sizes, though this is entirely cosmetic and once pulled or dug up, go into the players inventory. They can then be used to craft various DIY projects such as Medicine or a Leaf Umbrella or sold to Timmy for a 10 Bells and to fulfill Nook Miles objectives.
