Real-world information
The Family Computer Disk System (ファミリーコンピュータ ディスクシステム?), or commonly known as the Famicom Disk System (ファミコン ディスクシステム?), is an add-on for the Family Computer (Famicom) video game console released by Nintendo in Japan on February 21, 1986, and in Hong Kong in 1991. The add-on comprises of two parts, the RAM adapter cartridge and the disk drive. The RAM adapter cartridge is inserted into the Famicom's cartridge slot along with a hard-wired cable that plugs into the disk drive. It uses a floppy disk format called the Disk Card, based on the QuickDisk format. The Famicom Disk System contains a palette of primarily red, yellow, black, and white.[2]
The Famicom Disk System sold over 4.4 million units before being discontinued in 1993. Services for re-writing Disk Cards were discontinued on September 30, 2003. The add-on was never released outside of Asia.
Game overview
Ice Hockey is a sports game that was originally released for the Family Computer Disk System in Japan on January 21, 1988, and later for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in March 1988, and in Europe on April 15, 1988.
Upon starting a game, the player must select one of six teams, the opponent's skill level from one to five, and a time of 7, 10, or 15 minutes. Each team consists of four players of three different types including thin, ordinary, and stocky. A fifth player is also on each team and acts as the goaltender. Like in the real life sport, the objective of Ice Hockey is to hit the puck into the opponent's goal with a hockey stick. The arena is designed after a typical ice hockey rink, with the surface covered in ice and goals positioned on each side. The rink includes several marked areas, which includes the goal line that the puck must cross to score.
Each of the game's six teams represents a country, including:
The teams in the Famicom Disk System version are slightly different to the teams in the NES version. The NES version replaces the Japan team with the Sweden team and swaps the positions of the first two teams making the USA team the first selectable team. Additionally, the main game music and goal jingle between versions are also different.[3]
