The Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance, commonly abbreviated as NIWA, is a collaboration of a network of independent Nintendo-oriented wikis. The alliance was started in early 2010, and has since grown to contain 31 wikis as of October 26, 2023.

History[edit]

The Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance was started when Zelda Wiki, a wiki covering The Legend of Zelda series, sought affiliation with Bulbapedia, a wiki covering Pokémon, in January 2010. A suggestion was made soon after to create a network of independent Nintendo-oriented wikis. This suggestion was agreed upon and soon after, Super Mario Wiki, a wiki containing information about the Mario series, was contacted to join the network with Zelda Wiki and Bulbapedia. The staff of the three wikis collaborated to create the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance, which was finally launched on February 14, 2010.

The Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance currently includes 31 different wikis.

ARMS Institute[edit]

The ARMS Institute contains information about ARMS, a fighting game developed for the Nintendo Switch. It was founded on May 1, 2017 on Miraheze and became independent the following month. It joined NIWA on June 22, 2017.

Bulbapedia[edit]

Bulbapedia contains information about Pokémon. It was founded on December 21, 2004, by Liam Pomfret. It includes articles for all species of Pokémon, the various Pokémon games, the Pokémon manga, and more.

Dragalia Lost Wiki[edit]

Dragalia Lost Wiki contains information about Dragalia Lost, a mobile game by Nintendo. It was founded on May 4, 2018 on Gamepedia and become independent in January 29, 2021. It joined NIWA on April 28, 2021.

Fire Emblem Wiki[edit]

Fire Emblem Wiki contains information about the Fire Emblem series of video games. It was founded by Eliwood (also known as Yusei) on August 26, 2010. The wiki joined NIWA on April 20, 2011, which was also the day that Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, the first installment in the Fire Emblem series, was released in Japan.

F-Zero Wiki[edit]

F-Zero Wiki contains information about the F-Zero series of video games and anime. It was founded at Wikia on November 6, 2007, and was later moved to independent hosting on January 2, 2011. The wiki was publicly launched on July 24, 2011, and on March 16, 2012, F-Zero Wiki joined the NIWA.

Golden Sun Universe[edit]

Golden Sun Universe contains information about the Golden Sun series of role-playing fantasy video games. It was founded at Wikia in late 2006, and later moved to become independent and part of NIWA on November 25, 2010.

Hard Drop Wiki[edit]

Hard Drop Wiki contains information about the Tetris brand of video games. It was founded in March 2006, until it was moved to the harddrop.com domain in July 2009. Hard Drop Wiki joined NIWA on January 17, 2014.

Icaruspedia[edit]

Icaruspedia contains information about the Kid Icarus series of video games. The wiki became independent on January 8, 2012, and was able to become a part of NIWA on March 23, 2012.

Inkipedia[edit]

Inkipedia contains information about the 'Splatoon franchise. Its aim is to cover all aspects of the series, both high and low. Though founded on Wikia on June 10, 2014, Inkipedia went independent May 18, 2015, just days before Splatoon's release, and joined NIWA on July 5, 2015.

Kingdom Hearts Wiki[edit]

Kingdom Hearts Wiki contains information about the Kingdom Hearts franchise. It was founded in 2006 on Wikia by a user named Riku5464, and would later go independent on February 9, 2011. Originally an affiliate of NIWA since 2012, it became a full member on January 19, 2023. Kingdom Hearts Wiki is also part of the Square Enix Independent Wiki Alliance (SEIWA), a similar organization to NIWA specializing in Square Enix franchises.

Kovopedia[edit]

Kovopedia contains information about the Magical Vacation series of video games. It was founded in 2010 on Wikia as the Magical Wiki, and would become independent in 2022. It joined NIWA on March 2, 2023.

Lylat Wiki[edit]

Lylat Wiki contains information about the Star Fox series of video games. It was founded in early 2010 by Justin Folvarcik. Along with project head Tacopill, Folvarcik made Lylat Wiki independent from Arwingpedia, and not long after it joined NIWA on October 1, 2010.

Metroid Wiki[edit]

Metroid Wiki contains information about the Metroid series of video games. It was founded on January 27, 2010, by Nathanial Rumphol-Janc and Zelda Informer, a website with content related to the Zelda series of video games. It joined on May 29, 2010.

MiiWiki[edit]

MiiWiki contains information about Miis and the video games that Miis appear in. It was founded in early 2021 by Kirb, but did not go public until late July 2021. It joined NIWA on October 26, 2023.

Mystery Dungeon Franchise Wiki[edit]

Mystery Dungeon Franchise Wiki contains information about the Mystery Dungeon series of video games developed by Spike Chunsoft. Formed in 2019 from a series of moves and mergers of other smaller wikis with its first iteration in 2008, Mystery Dungeon Franchise Wiki became independent in 2020 from the Gamepedia platform, and would join the alliance on June 22, 2023.

NintendoWiki[edit]

NintendoWiki contains information about Nintendo itself, including articles regarding games and people who have or do work for Nintendo, amongst other things. It also serves as a hub for every member of NIWA. It was founded on May 12, 2010, by the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance team, and would formally be revealed on December 10, 2010.

Nookipedia[edit]

Nookipedia Nookipedia Leaf.png contains information about the Animal Crossing series of video games. It was originally founded in August 2005 on Wikia by Aeryka. At the time, it was known as Animal Crossing City. In November 2010, Animal Crossing City decided to fork from Wikia and merge with a newly-created independent wiki known as Animal Crossing Wiki, due to dissatisfaction with how Wikia was running the wikis that it hosted, including the implementation of a mandatory new skin known as "Oasis". After the merging, the wiki joined NIWA on November 19, 2010, and it was renamed to Nookipedia on January 1, 2011.

Pikipedia[edit]

Pikipedia contains information about the Pikmin series of video games. It was founded in December 2005 by Dark Lord Revan at Wikia. In September 2010, Pikipedia became an independent wiki. It and Pikmin Fanon joined on October 8, 2010.

Pikmin Fanon[edit]

Pikmin Fanon is a wiki for fan stories (also known as fanon) revolving around the Pikmin series of video games. It was founded on November 1, 2008, by Rocky0718 at Wikia, and became independent on September 14, 2010. It and Pikipedia joined NIWA on October 8, 2010. The wiki was hosted by Grifkuba from 2020 to 2022 after Porplemontage transferred ownership, before moving once again to The OpenWiki Project.

Rhythm Heaven Wiki[edit]

Rhythm Heaven Wiki contains information about the Rhythm Heaven series of video games. It was founded in June 12, 2009 by James233 on Fandom. It became independent on August 3, 2023, and joined NIWA on August 30, 2023.

SmashWiki[edit]

SmashWiki contains information about the Super Smash Bros. series of video games. The wiki was originally two separate wikis; there was SmashWiki, which was founded by Gideon and hosted by Smash World Forums, and there was also Super Smash Bros. Wiki, which was hosted by Wikia and founded by Alexir55. On February 29, 2008, SmashWiki merged with Super Smash Bros. Wiki on Fandom/Wikia, the result usually referred to as "SmashWikia". In the midst of dissatisfaction with Fandom/Wikia however, on September 28, 2010, SmashWiki became an independent site, and joined NIWA on October 29, 2010.

Starfy Wiki[edit]

Starfy Wiki contains information about the The Legendary Starfy series of video games, developed by TOSE for Nintendo. The wiki was founded on May 30, 2009 on Fandom/Wikia by BattleFranky202. The wiki documents all things related to Starfy, from element of storyline, gameplay as well as real-world references. The wiki went independent in early January 2011 and joined NIWA on April 28, 2011.

StrategyWiki[edit]

StrategyWiki contains collaborative video game strategy guides for both Nintendo games and games unrelated to Nintendo. It was founded in December 2005 by Brandon Suit with the desire to improve on existing strategy guides. In December 2008, Scott Jacobi founded ABXY LLC to operate and own StrategyWiki as a community. Two years later, StrategyWiki joined NIWA on October 15, 2010.

Super Mario Wiki[edit]

Super Mario Wiki contains information about the Mario series of video games and covers related series and crossovers, including Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, and Super Smash Bros.. It was founded on August 12, 2005 by Steve Shinn.

Ukikipedia[edit]

Ukikipedia contains technical information and guides about Super Mario 64 for the purposes of speedrunners. It was founded on June 8, 2018 by Stick, and joined NIWA on May 9, 2021.

Wapopedia[edit]

Drawn to Life Wapopedia (also named Drawn to Life Wiki or Wapopedia) contains information about the Drawn to Life series of video games. It was founded on July 8, 2008 on Fandom/Wikia, and later went independent on November 16, 2022. The wiki joined NIWA on December 13, 2022.

Wars Wiki[edit]

Wars Wiki contains information about Nintendo's lesser-known Wars series of video games, which includes Advance Wars, Battalion Wars, Game Boy Wars, and Famicom Wars. It was founded in February 2009 by JoJo and Wars Central, and would later join NIWA on June 4, 2010. The site is now hosted by ABXY LLC.

WikiBound[edit]

WikiBound contains information about the Mother/EarthBound series of video games. It was founded in early 2010 by Tacopill. It joined NIWA on Novemeber 5, 2010.

WiKirby[edit]

WiKirby contains information about the Kirby series of video games. It was founded on January 24, 2010, by Josh LeJeune. It joined NIWA on May 21, 2010.

Xeno Series Wiki[edit]

Xeno Series Wiki contains information about the Xenoblade Chronicles, Xenogears, and Xenosaga series. It was founded on February 4, 2020, and it joined NIWA on March 13, 2021.

Zelda Wiki[edit]

Zelda Wiki contains information about The Legend of Zelda series of video games, including news regarding the series. It was founded on April 23, 2005 by GoldenChaos, or Jess, as Zelda Universe Wiki. It would later change its name to Zelda Wiki.org, and then to Zelda Wiki. On March 8, 2017, Zelda Wiki moved to Gamepedia.[1] Gamepedia itself was acquired by Fandom, owners of the Animal Crossing Wiki (formerly Animal Crossing City), in 2018.[2] It would see Zeldapedia merge within this wiki, expanding the community, but had resulted in issues regarding its independence as a member of NIWA. In 2022, the wiki officially forked from Fandom, now hosted by ABXY, LLC.[3]

Donkey Kong Wiki[edit]

Donkey Kong Wiki contained information about the Donkey Kong series of video games. It was originally founded on Wikia on May 25, 2008, by a user with the username of Wiki443556. The wiki joined the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance on November 12, 2010, after becoming independent. It shut down in 2019 and its content was moved to Super Mario Wiki.

Dragon Quest Wiki[edit]

Dragon Quest Wiki contained information about the Dragon Quest series. It was originally founded on Wikia, and was fairly inactive until late 2009 when a new admin joined. In a wave of move-out away from Wikia, Dragon Quest Wiki went independent, and joined NIWA on March 30, 2012. On December 2022, following inappropriate conduct by a new host for Dragon Quest Wiki, the wiki had withdrawn from the alliance, while also receiving an expulsion from NIWA.[4]

Dragon Quest Wiki is also part of the Square Enix Independent Wiki Alliance (SEIWA), a similar organization to NIWA specializing in Square Enix franchises.
