Featured Articles[edit]

In the article, it reads "A new featured article will be chosen by a wiki team member each month." We don't currently do this so I think we should remove the information. I just wanted to check around first. Leem01 07:57, 3 January 2012 (EST)

Comment Comment What do you mean with Check around ? - unsigned comment from John (talkcontribs)

Considering the comment was made 3 years ago, the context probably is much different. Needless to say, you didn't have to ask that question. Also, {{comment}} is used during the voting or deciding process, not here. Mario Signature.png 16:05, March 27, 2015 (EDT)

The vagueness of "currently"[edit]

"An official method of recommending featured articles is currently in development."

Is it even in development "currently"? Like, right at this moment? It's been like that since November 6, 2010‎. Mario Sigpic.png MarioTalk to-a me! 02:54, October 9, 2013 (EDT)

Nope, the article is outdated. We do need to re-vamp our featured article system, including establishing a way to nominate articles, and reviewing our current articles (which may be out of date). If any editors want to start up a revamp in the sandbox or something, that'd definitely be an overdo project do to :) ~SuperHamster Talk 21:20, October 9, 2013 (EDT)
Yeah, what does need revamping though? I'm wondering. I know the system we have right now is... eh... Also, is there a sandbox anywhere? Mario Sigpic.png MarioTalk to-a me! 01:32, October 10, 2013 (EDT)
We do have a sandbox :) It's over at Nookipedia:Sandbox. You can always also make one as a subpage of your userpage.
In terms of what needs done, I think the best option for featured article nominations is to have a nominations page, as we do for staff members and featured pictures. We may also want to come with a concrete list of the qualities a featured article needs: full coverage in all games, good images, in-depth, etc. ~SuperHamster Talk 02:53, October 10, 2013 (EDT)
Okay, then. I'll try writing something up soon. Mario Sigpic.png MarioTalk to-a me! 14:25, October 10, 2013 (EDT)
Here, check the sandbox again. I wrote something and I'd like you (or somebody else) to review it. I added that articles can be deprived from featured article status, but I haven't written the process for that yet. Mario Sigpic.png MarioTalk to-a me! 15:04, October 10, 2013 (EDT)
Sorry for the late reply! Been busy and this slipped my mind. Looks great - nice job! I made a few small adjustments, the major part being about voting. I specified that admins and above are responsible for closing nominations. Also changed the part about users removing other users' votes - it's generally a bad idea to let users remove each others' votes, since that can be abused and cause arguments, etc. It's best to just leave the decision of whether or not to include bad votes to the closing administrator. Let me know what you think :) Thanks again, much appreciated. This part of the site has been neglected for quite a while. ~SuperHamster Talk 00:46, October 26, 2013 (EDT)

It is indeed a bad idea to let other users remove bad votes. However, I was thinking about voting to remove votes, but since only a handful of users can be active at a time, it may not be our best idea, so yeah, we should leave it to the administrator. The only thing that needs to be adjusted is that template (it says if it's +3, it passes, and if it's -3, it passes; successful featured article nominations should have no objections). Thanks for the feedback! Mario Sigpic.png MarioTalk to-a me! 14:33, October 26, 2013 (EDT)

By the way, what's going to happen to the featured articles at this moment, the ones that are already featured? Are we going to clean up it and start it from scratch or are we going to remove the badge from those that don't qualify the established standards? Mario Sigpic.png MarioTalk to-a me! 13:58, October 28, 2013 (EDT)
IMO, we should just remove the badge from those that don't meet the standards, to keep things simple. What do you think? ~SuperHamster Talk 14:11, October 28, 2013 (EDT)
Okay, then, when do we start? Mario Sigpic.png MarioTalk to-a me! 14:52, October 28, 2013 (EDT)
Is okay if I could help out? In terms of when we could start, I think starting it now could work. -mlnintendo97 18:00, October 28, 2013 (EDT)
Sounds cool to me. I think we're ready for the revamp. I'll try to help when I have time (but that isn't now ;P). ~SuperHamster Talk 23:37, October 28, 2013 (EDT)
Should the page be overhauled? Also, I don't mind helping and removing those that shouldn't be featured anymore. Mario Sigpic.png MarioTalk to-a me! 15:00, October 29, 2013 (EDT)

What part don't you understand? And if you don't care, why leave a message here? I kind of care, actually, but there are not a lot of regular users here, which is why there isn't much of a discussion. But, again, if you're going to leave a message, at least be specific. British spelling on the Featured Articles page[edit]

There's British spelling with favor, it's favour not favor. Also this Wiki does American English, not British English, is it okay for me to make the change? Mario und Prinzessin Peach.jpg Princess Peach Bulborb Buffet.jpg 18:37, June 15, 2016 (EDT)

Yes, nice catch. --Jake 02:16, June 16, 2016 (EDT)

Revamp of the featured article system[edit]

The first sentence of this page states that featured articles are "some of the best articles ever created". Looking over them, however, I've noticed two things:

1. There are only 26 featured articles, meaning any regular Nookipedia user will see repeats often on the main page – which I can attest to myself.
2. Many of the featured articles do not meet the quality standards stated on this page. In fact, some of them have been featured since the Wikia days and have not been improved much since. Many are ok or even pretty good articles – but certainly not "some of the best ever created".

These two reasons show that we really need to overhaul this system by re-evaluating all existing featured articles and finding new ones by revamping the nomination system. As for how we take on the latter, I think we need to increase traffic to this page more than anything, since nothing appears to be wrong with the nomination system itself, but clearly something isn't right when the last successful nomination started nearly four years ago and didn't reach a verdict until over two years later. An easy way to increase traffic here would be to add a link to this page in the featured article section of the main page. I know there are plenty of featured-worthy articles, but as it is now, they're not being recognized.

Another suggestion is to greatly expand our guidelines and streamline our voting system to the extent of Super Mario Wiki's featured article system, in addition to adding a voting section to unfeature articles, with currently featured articles being re-evaluated every year or so to see if they still hold up. ~ AlexBot2004 (Talk) 20:32, August 20, 2020 (EDT)

Agreed, with all of your points. The featured article system has largely been neglected since we first started the wiki. With the recent influx of new content and editors, I think now is the perfect time to both re-evaluate all existing featured articles as well as establish a clear process and timeline for nominating new featured articles. --Jake (talk) 20:54, August 20, 2020 (EDT)

As a step toward revamping our featured article system, one major step I am proposing is removing all of our current featured articles. Most have been featured for nearly ten years (and nearly all appear to not have even been voted on), and while at the time they may have met our standards, they do not now and typically do not showcase good writing, much less "some of the best ever created," and the last thing we want to do is send brand new users straight to some of our poorer articles. During this transition period, we would remove the featured article section from the main page and find pages that do meet our featured article standards. When the system returns, I believe it should follow the system of featured articles on other wikis, such as Super Mario Wiki and even Wikipedia, where a single featured article is shown on the main page for a set period of time, rather than our current system which displays a random one from a pool of articles upon page load. This would help solve the current "quantity over quality" outlook our system appears to have and will give editors more time to improve articles to featured status. Please let me know your thoughts below. ~ AlexBot2004 (Talk) 13:29, November 3, 2020 (EST)

I Support Support removing all current featured articles. As you say, they've not been reviewed in a long time and many of them will have been featured before the move from Fandom, with the featured status simply carrying over I believe. Drago (talk) Drago PC Villager Icon.png 14:03, November 3, 2020 (EST)
Support Support - I agree that we should start from scratch. I'll try and come up with a shortlist of articles that I think meet the criteria and maybe we can go from there. Also maybe now is the time to think about a broader quality assessment system? We could also identify 'good articles' that meet most but not all criteria, and encourage users to edit them to get them ready for featured article status. Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 11:12, November 5, 2020 (EST)
I've gone ahead and removed all featured articles and hid the featured article section on the main page. Our next step, like sunmarsh said, is thinking of a broader quality assessment system. I also like the idea of 'good articles' as you mentioned above. ~ AlexBot2004 (Talk) 20:56, November 10, 2020 (EST)
