WW/CF Exteriors[edit]

I should have mentioned this earlier, but during my WW/CF interior house-collecting adventures, I have noticed that villagers do have unique exteriors. This research is ongoing, but here's what I've gathered so far.

Wild World
Similar to the GameCube game, villagers have shared pools of exteriors. For example, I've noticed that Bones, Drake, Kiki, Monique, and Twiggy share an identical exterior model. HOWEVER, there is an additional twist. The textures of the house are randomly chosen (from a fixed pool). These textures affect the color and shapes of the roof tiling and windows, and such, and the fixed pool of randomized textures apply to any house model. So you can have Bones and Drake sharing house model #1 with totally different house textures, and you can have Aurora, Biskit, and Curly all have different house models but sharing the "green-and-yellow checkered roof + deep green body + beige fixtures" texture. I'm still recording house exteriors, but there seem to be at least 5 or 6 different textures in the texture pool, probably more.

City Folk
Similar to the GameCube game, villagers have shared pools of exteriors. For example, I've noticed that Rhonda and Rodeo share an identical exterior model/coloring. There are some cases where the house may look similar but actually have different colors, like in the case of Rowan and Queenie, where the houses are the same shape and mostly the same color, except they have different roof colors.

Additional Comments

  • I think for now it's probably alright to keep the exterior fields hidden for WW/CF until enough exterior images have been collected, but the CF field should definitely be re-added back in the future (not sure about the WW field due to its uniqueness).
  • For WW, I do not think it's possible, at least in-game, to capture the houses at an angle where you can see the whole house without the player character being in the shot. In fact there are many tall houses where I'm unable to capture the whole house in the first place. Maybe with the slingshot(?), but I have just been refreshing the first section of the game, not finishing the tutorial, in order to collect house interiors. In any case, I've been screenshotting the house exteriors I've encountered so far, all captured at an identical angle where the character first exits the house. I'm planning to upload all of them one day in the future, maybe to Google Drive, and hope I can get someone else's assistance in using ImageMagick to crop all of them.
  • For CF, it is possible to capture the houses at an angle without the player character being in the shot, so that's nice. HylianAngel (talk) 20:23, December 28, 2020 (EST)

Update
For CF, I've determined that there are six colors and five house models. I plan to name them in the style:

  • CF Exterior 1 Blue.png, CF Exterior 2 Blue.png, CF Exterior 3 Blue.png, CF Exterior 4 Blue.png, CF Exterior 5 Blue.png
  • CF Exterior 1 Brown.png, CF Exterior 2 Brown.png, CF Exterior 3 Brown.png, CF Exterior 4 Brown.png, CF Exterior 5 Brown.png
  • CF Exterior 1 Green.png, CF Exterior 2 Green.png, CF Exterior 3 Green.png, CF Exterior 4 Green.png, CF Exterior 5 Green.png
  • CF Exterior 1 Jade.png, CF Exterior 2 Jade.png, CF Exterior 3 Jade.png, CF Exterior 4 Jade.png, CF Exterior 5 Jade.png
  • CF Exterior 1 Purple.png, CF Exterior 2 Purple.png, CF Exterior 3 Purple.png, CF Exterior 4 Purple.png, CF Exterior 5 Purple.png
  • CF Exterior 1 Yellow.png, CF Exterior 2 Yellow.png, CF Exterior 3 Yellow.png, CF Exterior 4 Yellow.png, CF Exterior 5 Yellow.png

The "jade" houses are closer in shade to "mint," but I figured it might be a good idea to stay away from the name mint since a villager shares the same name. Seems like a good idea, as long as Nintendo doesn't release a character name "Jade" 50 years from now. HylianAngel (talk) 06:31, January 12, 2021 (EST)

Update
Because I've been using the same save seed for collecting CF interiors, I was under the false impression that house models were always the same in a set pool. I should have been generating new save seeds to see if this was consistent beforehand, but I did not think to do that. Totally my bad. So everything I wrote about CF is not correct. However, I've been using various save seeds for WW, so that info is correct. HylianAngel (talk) 22:03, January 15, 2021 (EST)

No worries, and thank you for all your work with villager houses! At the very least, the images can be used on Villager houses in a gallery. ~ AlexBot2004 (Talk) 00:29, January 16, 2021 (EST)
Sounds good. I'll work on completing the gallery of exteriors, since there are many more different textures associated with each of the 5 house models. More tentative information that I'm not entirely sure is correct: After doing a few more resets and watching some CF playthroughs, I think how it works is that each villager is associated with house model #1, #2, #3, #4, or #5, so a particular villager will always have that house model, with a randomized texture. And each town has a texture-based theme, where all houses follow a particular theme (like the current save seed I'm on has mostly pink/pastel houses, but the previous save seed had a rustic feel). This makes WW and CF similar mechanically, with the one difference being WW doesn't have the entire town follow a particular theme. HylianAngel (talk) 00:41, January 16, 2021 (EST)
More information: There seem to be 5 exterior themes: Classic, Pink, Ranch, Rustic, and Stone (non-official names). Each theme has a total of 15 exteriors, 3 colors x 5 house models. Each town will select 2 themes (I believe this is random, though the combos I've seen so far are Classic-Pink, Classic-Ranch, Classic-Stone, Pink-Ranch, Ranch-Rustic, Rustic-Stone, and I'm resetting to see if all combos are possible). So each town will have a total of 30 potential exteriors. And like mentioned before, each villager is associate with having either house model #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, so for example Al, Alice, Antonio, Aurora, Baabaara, Bunnie, etc. will always have house model #5. I'm almost done collecting all of the exteriors so I'll be uploading them in the style of CF Classic Exterior 1 Orange.png, which is CF [theme] Exterior [# house model] [roof color].png HylianAngel (talk) 18:22, January 21, 2021 (EST)
I've reset some number of times, I think the only combos are Classic-Pink, Classic-Stone, Pink-Ranch, Ranch-Rustic, and Rustic-Stone, meaning that each theme has 2 compatible partners and 2 impossible partners; the impossible combos are Classic-Ranch, Classic-Rustic, Pink-Rustic, Pink-Stone, and Ranch-Stone. HylianAngel (talk) 05:15, January 23, 2021 (EST)
Exciting news. I believe that each villager truly does have fixed exteriors. Before, I didn't understand the concept that there were 5 exterior themes and I was shocked when a single villager had 2 different exteriors. However, what I didn't realize at the time was that one exterior was from the Ranch theme while the other was from the Rustic theme. So each villager has a unique exterior from the Classic, Pink, Ranch, Rustic, and Stone theme. I'm still gathering exterior information, but it seems that villagers are truly in pools, so if you know that Bella, Dotty, and Peewee have Rustic Blue #1, then you can predict that they will also have Classic Yellow #1 and Pink Yellow #1. So theoretically all villagers have 5 specific exteriors each, 1 from each theme, in set pools, but I'll post more concrete info as I gather more exteriors. Uploaded every CF exterior image except for Stone (will get to that when I can). I misnamed one of the house exteriors and couldn't move the proper image to that page anymore because it became a redirect page, please delete the duplicate at File:CF Exterior 4 Green.png. CF Starting Villagers
After resetting many times, I think there might be some restrictions on who the starting characters can be (unless this is just some sort of extremely horrible luck or a huge coincidence). Characters I have not seen on Day 1:

  • Superheroes: Agent S, Big Top, Kid Cat
  • Oriental: Cyrano, Genji, Kabuki, Marcel, Snake
  • Kangaroos: Astrid, Kitt, Mathilda
  • Monkeys: Champ, Elise, Monty, Nana, Simon, Tammi
  • Octopi: Marina, Octavian
  • Unique: Ankha, Coco, Knox, Lucky, Ribbot, Sterling, Stinky
  • Not Unique: Anabelle, Gigi, Pango (not sure why I haven't seen these 3 yet, will cross them out if I do encounter them)

I'm not sure why the game would be designed that way, I can only assume that perhaps seeing these types of villagers on Day 1 might surprise the player and that's why they are mysteriously excluded. Either way, I have never seen any of these villagers as starting characters. This would normally pose a problem, but thankfully City Folk NPC Tool exists, which allows seeing any of those interiors by editing a villager. Unfortunately, the NPC Tool does not change the house exterior to be the appropriate exterior, it just retains the exterior of the previous inhabitant, so it's not possible to know what exteriors are associated with these characters unless they move into someone's town organically. (If there is an easy way to determine the house exteriors, I'd love to know.) HylianAngel (talk) 03:36, January 24, 2021 (EST)

I don't have an answer to how to get the exteriors, but I do know that the original game has similar restrictions on who can be a starting villager, a lot of which are similar to the ones you listed above (ostriches, kangaroos, octopuses, and anteaters as well as Kabuki, Stinky, Lucky, Ribbot, Velma, Rizzo, Coco, Genji, Snake, Tiara, and Woolio all can't be starting villagers). I'll try to find a complete list for CF, then I'll post it here. ~ AlexBot2004 (Talk) 13:21, January 24, 2021 (EST)
What's interesting is that in that list, I've seen Rizzo as a starting character. But Kabuki, Stinky, Lucky, Ribbot, Coco, Genji, and Snake not being starting characters matches up with CF (Velma, Tiara, and Woolio don't make an appearance in CF). Also in CF, ostriches can be starting characters. I wanted to make the assumption that anteaters can't be starting characters, but I've seen Antonio who is an anteater, so there shouldn't be a reason that I haven't encountered Anabelle, Cyrano, and Pango. HylianAngel (talk) 15:28, January 24, 2021 (EST)

CF Starting Villagers (Minor Rearrangement)
I'm pretty sure this is the full list of CF villagers who can't be starting characters.

  • Anteaters (except Antonio): Anabelle, Cyrano, Pango
  • Kangaroos: Astrid, Kitt, Mathilda
  • Monkeys: Champ, Elise, Monty, Nana, Simon, Tammi
  • Octopi: Marina, Octavian
  • Oriental: Genji, Kabuki, Marcel, Snake
  • Superheroes: Agent S, Big Top, Kid Cat
  • Unique: Ankha, Coco, Gigi, Knox, Lucky, Ribbot, Sterling, Stinky

WW Starting Villagers
I'm still collecting WW interiors/exteriors, but I'm noticing a trend in the type of villagers that I have never encountered as a starting character.

  • Anteaters: Anabelle, Antonio, Cyrano, Pango
  • Kangaroos: Kitt, Mathilda
  • Monkeys: Champ, Elise, Monty, Nana, Simon, Tammi
  • Octopi: Marina, Octavian
  • Ostriches: Gladys, Queenie
  • Islanders in previous titles: Bud, Drift, Caroline, Maelle, Rowan
  • Oriental: Genji, Kabuki, Snake
  • Superheroes: Agent S, Big Top, Kid Cat
  • Unique: Coco, Lucky, Ribbot
  • Not Unique (I should encounter these characters eventually): Benedict, Boone, Daisy, Elvis, Filbert, Freckles, Hugh, Jitters, Mitzi, Puddles, Rhonda, Rocco, Roscoe, Teddy, Tiffany

This is quite interesting (if the trend continues to hold true), because that means ostriches, islanders in previous titles, and Antonio can't be starting characters in WW even though they can be starting characters in CF. HylianAngel (talk) 15:31, February 17, 2021 (EST)

Trivia[edit]

Hello, I hope this is a good place to bring this minor point up. Could villager appearances on K.K. album art appear somewhere on their pages? Maybe under trivia? I also hope I did this right. Thanks. BB$5 (talk) 20:57, January 1, 2020 (CST)

I think that's a great idea, and the trivia section would be a good spot. ~SuperHamster Talk 03:34, January 2, 2021 (EST)

I need help with Template:HHD_Info[edit]

I have two major goals: fixing up the "House" sections on each villager's page, and fixing up the "Happy Home Designer" sections to have the correct info. To put it bluntly, I'm not very good at understanding the syntax used on the House Info templates and Happy Home Designer template. Despite that, I made three major changes to Template:HHD Info:

  1. Added a thought bubble section (been slowly populating these). It doesn't show up if there is no text, which is necessary for Goldie, Carrie, the DLC characters, and all of the special villagers who don't have a thought bubble.
  2. So as it's known, villagers have 1-3 required items. (Or 0 in the case of the special villagers.) While very rare, some villagers, like Beardo, only have 1 required item. The template used to add a newline for some reason if a villager only had 1 item. So to fix it, I made a horribly complicated change (like a bunch of if-else's) to remove that newline. Again, I'm not very good at this.
  3. Added pictures to be displayed next to the 1-3 required items. It's just the name of the item with "HHD Icon.png" appended to it. I think this is a nice change, because it kind of mimics what the "Client's Vision" clipboard looks like within the game itself, which also displays furniture icons next to the required items.

The problem that currently exists involves the third change that I made. Some villagers have furniture with non-standard names:

I would be very thankful if someone who is knowledgeable on editing templates could add functionality so that alternate furniture images could be specified that differ from the displayed name. It would be similar to the functionality of the House Info templates. I would do this myself if I could, but I do not know how. HylianAngel (talk) 04:13, January 28, 2021 (EST)

Alright, so I think that I addressed the issue by adding the following parameters: img1, img2, and img3. You can use these to override the file name for parameters item1, item2, and item3, respectively. Secondly, I rewrote the code so that the line breaks <br> only appear if there are values entered for item2 or item3, and therefore by default there is no break after item1. Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 14:21, January 30, 2021 (EST)
Thank you so much, it works perfectly. I fixed the 3 pages with broken image links, and I'll be able to use it with more non-standard names as they come up. I really appreciate all of the help. HylianAngel (talk) 14:24, January 30, 2021 (EST)

Leader Application[edit]

I saw that you're looking for a leader, if you're interested then I can lead this project team? I think I'll be helpful and I'm already in the process of fixing something on a few villager pages. --Zucker2008 09:45, June 16, 2021 (BST)

We appreciate your enthusiasm, but a project leader should have already demonstrated considerable knowledge and experience editing the types of pages that the project centers around. The leader should also have a general plan, or goal in mind for what they would like to accomplish as project leader. Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 23:38, July 2, 2021 (EDT)

Hello I am Template:Nookfan and I would like to be leader of project villager, I will: . add more info on villagers . add more villager pages . improve villager pages and a lot more!!! go nook!!! - unsigned comment from Nookfan (talkcontribs)

Please see sunmarsh's comment above. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I don't think you have enough experience yet. Drago (talk) Drago PC Villager Icon.png 10:35, July 11, 2022 (EDT)
