Starting villagers are villagers that appear when the first player moves into their town (island in New Horizons). The starting villagers roster varies between different Animal Crossing games.

Appearances[edit]

In Animal Crossing[edit]

In Animal Crossing, the game starts with 6 villagers. An initial town will always have a jock, lazy, cranky, normal, peppy, and snooty villager, with further villagers being added to a maximum of 15 villagers.

The following villagers cannot be starting villagers:

In Doubutsu no Mori e+[edit]

In Doubutsu no Mori e+, all of the previous non-starter villagers return, and are joined by the following villagers that can only be obtained by scanning e-Reader cards:

In Wild World[edit]

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, the game starts with 3 villagers. The player's town will continue to have new villagers come in until there are 8 villagers.

In City Folk[edit]

The following villagers cannot be starting villagers, nor do they appear in the city:

In New Leaf[edit]

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the game starts with 5 villagers. The player's town will continue to have new villagers come in until there are 10 villagers. The town cannot start with smug and big sister villagers.

The following villagers have either a smug or big sister personality, and cannot be a starting villager in the player's town:

In New Horizons[edit]

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the game starts with 2 villagers: 1 jock and 1 big sister villager. The next 3 villagers that move onto the island will be peppy, normal, and lazy respectively. Additional villagers can be invited by the player until there are 10 villagers. The starting 5 villagers will not have their default interior; they will instead use a starting interior that cannot be changed unless the villager moves out, or the Happy Home Paradise DLC is purchased, allowing the player to either redesign their interior or ask Isabelle to reset their interior.

The following villagers have either a jock or big sister personality, and therefore can go to the island with the player on the initial plane flight:

The following villagers have either a peppy, normal, or lazy personality, and therefore can go to the island after the villager house development quest:

(Note: The Sanrio villagers Rilla, Marty, Étoile, Chai, and Chelsea cannot be starting villagers, and can only go to the island if their respective amiibo cards are scanned.)
