Unavailable content
Every entry in the Animal Crossing series has contained some content that was only available during limited-time promotions—typically over the internet—and is now unavailable through normal gameplay. Additionally, online multiplayer and any other content that required an internet connection to experience in Wild World, City Folk, New Leaf, and Happy Home Designer is unavailable following the discontinuations of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in 2014 and Nintendo Network in 2024.
Appearances[edit]
In the first-generation games[edit]
Doubutsu no Mori+, Animal Crossing, and Doubutsu no Mori e+ contain some NES game items that can only be obtained through user-specific secret codes that could be generated on the games' official websites. Since the code generators on the official sites have been shut down, these items are no longer available through official means; however, third-party code generators exist that can produce functionally identical codes.
In Doubutsu no Mori+, Ice Climber, the dreadful painting, and the novel painting were only obtainable through the Data Moving Service, a service offered by Nintendo from 2002 to 2005 in which users could mail Nintendo a Nintendo 64 Controller Pak with Doubutsu no Mori player data along with a Nintendo GameCube Memory Card with Doubutsu no Mori+ town data to copy a player from the former to the latter. The dreadful and novel paintings were only available if they were in the player's pockets when the transfer was done, and Ice Climber was placed in the player's house as a bonus for using the service. These three items do not appear in the catalog in Doubutsu no Mori+.
In Doubutsu no Mori e+, any objects outside of the three randomly-chosen ones available from the start were only available through the Object Delivery Center on the game's official website, which would generate a user-specific code for any object. The footprints, egg, and mushroom objects could only ever be obtained this way, as they can never appear in the starting list. The Object Delivery Center is no longer operational since 2019, although third-party code generators exist.
In Wild World[edit]
Online multiplayer in Animal Crossing: Wild World is no longer available following the discontinuation of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection on May 20, 2014. However, local multiplayer is still available, along with Katie, Kaitlin, and the Nookington's upgrade. Since Blanca required the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to appear in town, she is no longer available.
16 items—the 14 Mario Theme items, the pikmin, and the Blue Falcon—were only distributed through limited-time DS Download Station events in retail stores, or in some cases, Wi-Fi distributions. None of these items appear in the catalog. Additionally, the six monkey villagers could only move in through DS Download Station distributions.
Since the Wii U Virtual Console version of Wild World does not have any multiplayer functionality (local or online), it is not possible to visit other towns in that version, making Katie and Kaitlin, along with their items, unavailable. Because of the lack of multiplayer, the requirement to have a visitor shop at Nookway before it can upgrade to Nookington's is removed in the Wii U version.
In City Folk[edit]
Like in Wild World, online multiplayer in Animal Crossing: City Folk is no longer available following the discontinuation of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection on May 20, 2014. Unlike Wild World, however, there is no local multiplayer equivalent outside of the DS Suitcase, which does not allow for simultaneous multiplayer. Therefore, it is no longer possible for multiple players to play in the same town at the same time.
91 items were added to the game and distributed to players via WiiConnect24 for limited times from 2008 to 2012. These items do not exist on the game disc and therefore cannot be obtained through memory editing or save editing unless the item data is injected into the save file first.
In New Leaf[edit]
Online multiplayer in Animal Crossing: New Leaf is no longer available following the discontinuation of Nintendo Network on April 8, 2024. Local multiplayer and anything that requires visiting other towns are still available; however, dreams and Club Tortimer are completely inaccessible. The Dream Suite can still be built, as even an unsuccessful attempt to connect online still unlocks it as a public works project. The following content that required online play is unavailable:
- The box of chocolates, which is the only Club Tortimer-exclusive item that was not later made available through RVs in the Welcome amiibo update.
- The Dreamer, Heavy Sleeper, and Mr./Ms. Sandman badges, which required visiting dream towns to obtain.
There are 57[nb 1] items that were only distributed through limited-time SpotPass or Nintendo Zone events. Several more items were initially distribution-only, but were later made available for purchase from certain characters' RVs in the Welcome amiibo update. Additionally, Filly and Holden's RVs could only appear in the campground through limited-time Japanese events (Nintendo Zone at 7-Eleven stores for Filly, SpotPass for Holden). Therefore, the 19 exclusive items from their RVs are now unobtainable.
In New Horizons[edit]
The 11 Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp crossover items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons can no longer be unlocked in Nook Shopping following the former game's discontinuation on November 28, 2024.
In Happy Home Designer[edit]
The sharing of designed homes online in Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is no longer available following the discontinuation of Nintendo Network on April 8, 2024. Additionally, participating in the Happy Home Network Design Contest, which ran from 2015 to 2017, was the only way to unlock the 20 exclusive items used in the contest.
Five villagers—Claude, Felyne, Filly, Louie, and Maddie—were only available as clients through SpotPass or Nintendo Zone distributions from 2015 to 2016. Therefore, all of the items exclusively unlocked by these villagers can no longer be unlocked.
In Pocket Camp[edit]
Many of the items in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp were only available for a limited time during events or giveaways. Most of these items were later made available in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete via the Complete Item Catalog, with the exceptions of items from crossover events that are based on other franchises, and certain special-giveaway items; these can only be obtained if the player already owned them in Pocket Camp before its shutdown and transferred their save data to Pocket Camp Complete. In addition to the crossover items, the Sanrio crossover villagers cannot be obtained in Pocket Camp Complete.
Notes[edit]
- ↑ This count includes the 7-Eleven crossover items that were later made available through Filly's RV. Since Filly's RV was itself only available through limited-time Nintendo Zone events, these items are still unobtainable.
