The Observatory is a room located upstairs in the museum. It is run by Celeste, the sister of Blathers. It was first introduced in Animal Crossing: Wild World and also featured in Animal Crossing: City Folk.

In the observatory, there is a large telescope that players can look through. Players can do three things with the telescope: they can stargaze at the sky, create constellations, or delete constellations.

If players wish to create a constellation, they are given a view of the starry sky and can create a constellation with up to 16 lines. When the process is finished, Celeste will then ask them what they would like to call the constellation. Once the constellation is named, she will put the design in the database and will mention to the player the day and time the constellation will be in the optimum viewing point in the sky.

When a player visits a friend locally or over Wi-Fi, or uses Tag Mode to make contact with another town, the players will exchange constellations, meaning that each player will see their friend's constellations in the sky in addition to their own. Some of each players' own creations may be removed to make room for the friend's, however.
