Cats are a species in the Animal Crossing series who appear both as villagers and as special characters. They all have pointed ears and slender tails. In the real world, cats are a domesticated animal commonly kept as house pets, much like dogs.

There are currently twenty-six cat villagers and four special cat characters; this makes them the most abundant species, not counting the bears added with the bear cubs, which equals thirty-four villagers.

Out of the cat villagers, eleven are male and fifteen are female. Of these, six are peppy, five are snooty, four are lazy, four are jocks, three are normal, two are cranky, one is smug, and one is big sister. Out of the cat villagers, only Meow and Pierre have not re-appeared after Doubutsu no Mori e+, and additionally, Felyne is absent from Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Ankha, Monique, Stinky, and Tabby are also absent from Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.

Of all the original villagers that appeared in Doubutsu no Mori, the cat is the only species to not have any missing villagers returning in the Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo update.

Although they are not the only species to appear as both villagers and special characters, they are notable for the fact that the two look almost identical to each other, while, for example, special dogs tend to look completely different from their villager counterparts.
