Starting villagers are villagers that appear when the first player moves into their town (island in New Horizons). The starting villagers roster varies between different Animal Crossing games.

Appearances

In Animal Crossing

In Animal Crossing, the game starts with six villager on the town. An initial town will always have a jock, lazy, cranky, normal, peppy, and snooty villager, with further villagers being added to a maximum of 15 villagers.

The following villagers cannot be starters in Animal Crossing:

In Doubutsu no Mori e+

In Doubutsu no Mori e+, all of the previous non-starter villagers return, and are joined by the following villagers that can only be obtained by scanning e-Reader cards:

In Wild World

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, the game starts with three villagers. The player's town will continue to have new villagers come in until there are 8 villagers.

The following villagers cannot be starting villagers:

In City Folk

In Animal Crossing: City Folk, the game starts with six villagers. The player's town will continue to have new villagers come in until there are 10 villagers.

The following villagers cannot be starting villagers, nor do they appear in the city:

In New Leaf

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the game starts with five villagers. The player's town will continue to have new villagers come in until there are 10 villagers.

The town cannot start with smug and big sister villagers.

In New Horizons

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the game starts with two villagers on the island: one with a jock personality and one with a big sister personality. The next three villagers that move onto the island will be of the peppy, normal, and lazy personalities respectively.

The following villagers have either a jock or big sister personality, and therefore can go to the island with the player on the initial plane flight.
