A '''home loan''', also known as a '''debt''' or '''mortgage''', is an amount of [[Bell]]s that is required to pay off to purchase or expand a [[player]]'s [[player house|home]]. After the player pays off the loan once, their home will be expanded again and they will be given a new loan. Once the house is fully expanded, the player will usually get a reward for paying off the final loan.

In games prior to {{NL}}, a portion of the initial home loan is automatically paid off after the player completes their [[part-time job]] at [[Tom Nook's store]].

In {{DnM}}, {{DnM+}}, {{PG}}, and {{DnMe+}}, the home loan can be paid off by speaking to [[Pelly]] or [[Phyllis]] at the [[post office]]. Additionally, in all three games, the player cannot deposit their Bells into their [[savings]] until their home loan is fully paid off, and fully paying off the home loan results in a statue of the player being placed outside the [[train station]]. The statue changes size and color based on the order each of the four players in the town pay it off: the first player to pay off their home loan receives a golden statue, the second player a silver statue, the third player a bronze statue, and the fourth player a jade statue.
