Fossils are collectible items in the SER that can be dug up from the ground. They can be donated to the museum, sold, or placed in the player's home as a piece of furniture. Every day, several fossils appear buried in town. They are initially unidentified and must be brought to Blathers (or in the first-generation games, sent to the Farway Museum) to reveal exactly which fossil it is.

There are two types of fossils: multi-part fossils that make up the skeletons of larger fossilized animals and standalone fossils that are either smaller fossilized animals or non-animal fossils.
+
Fossils are the preserved remains of a prehistoric plant or animal, encased in rock over thousands of years. Fossils in the SER can be found on occasion around the player's town, buried under the soil with a tell-tale crack in the ground above it. Unidentified fossils can be dug up with a shovel; it can be taken to the museum or mailed for identification, sold, placed in a house, used in DIY recipes in NH, or discarded.

Appearances
+
In PG and , the fossils must each be individually mailed to the Farway Museum, which is located outside the player's town, for identification. In short onwards, it can be identified by Blathers, the curator, free of charge. Upon being identified, it can be donated or returned to the player's inventory. In short, there are 52 fossils to be collected, all forming a part of a dinosaur, early mammal, aquatic reptile, or an entire, yet smaller, fossil. After being completed, Blathers gives a small talk on the finished fossil, while the fossil itself has its scientific name and the period in history that it lived in written next to the exhibit.

In every first-generation Animal Crossing game, there are a total of 25 fossils: 20 multi-part fossils that comprise seven skeletons, and five standalone fossils. Up to five fossils appear buried in town every day and can spawn in any acre except the ones that contain the player houses, the wishing well, the train station, the lake, or the dump. The fossils that appear will not exceed a total of five fossils currently buried in town.

After the player digs up their first fossil, the Farway Museum sends them a letter, and fossils can then be sent to the Farway Museum for identification. There is no limit to the number of fossils that can be sent to the Farway Museum in one day, but it will only send back three identified fossils each day. The Farway Museum can store up to 30 fossils in a queue to be sent to the player; once this limit is reached, any additional fossils sent to the Farway Museum are lost. In , PG, and , fossils can be donated to the museum.
+
On average, players can find three fossils in their town per day, provided there is enough space for them to spawn. In NL, four fossils tend to spawn each day. Other items such as pitfall seeds may also be buried underground. In NH, four or five fossils spawn each day on the Player's island. Fossils may also be found on island tours.

When placed in the player's house, standalone fossils give 300 HRA points each, and multi-part fossils give 1,000 points each. Multi-part fossils are treated as a set and give a point bonus of 3,000 × the number of fossils in the set when completed.
+
Fossils as furniture items
left
+
Fossils may also be displayed in the player's house and provide large boosts for HRA scoring and the player's bell funds. Stand alone fossils (trilobite, egg, amber, etc.) provide small boosts, skulls provide a big boost, and a completed skeleton gives the highest boost. As furniture, all fossils have either Old School (short), Retro (short), or Quirky (short) genres. If players have all the parts of a fossil, they can optionally take it to Cyrus and have him shrink the fossil to a mini figure that takes only one square and can be displayed on a table.

In WW, there are a total of 52 fossils: 42 multi-part fossils that comprise 14 skeletons, and 10 standalone fossils. New multi-part fossils include the Ankylosaur, Dimetrodon, Iguanodon, Pachycephalosaur, Parasaur, Sabretooth Tiger, and Seismosaur; new standalone fossils include the archaeopteryx, dino droppings, fern fossil, Peking Man, and shark tooth. Additionally, the ptera skull has been split into two items: the ptera skull and ptera body.

Three fossils appear buried in town every day, and they can now be identified directly by Blathers. After donation, interacting with a completed fossil skeleton's plaque in the museum now lists the fossil's length and geologic period.

All fossils are part of the "old-school" genre. All multi-part fossils have brown as both of their colors, while the standalone ones have either gray, brown, or orange as their first color and brown as their second. When placed in the player's house, standalone fossils give 300 HRA points each, and multi-part fossils give 1,000 points each. Multi-part fossils are treated as a set and give a point bonus of 1,000 × the number of fossils in the set when completed.
