Furniture can be placed either on the floor, hung on a wall (beginning in {{NL|short}}), hung from the ceiling (beginning in {{NH|short}} version {{NHVer|2.0}}), placed on the ground outside (beginning in {{NH|short|nolink}}), or placed on top of other furniture. Each item has a size in tiles that it takes up when placed, ranging from 1.0×0.5 to 3×3 in {{NH|short|nolink}}.{{Note|In main series games prior to {{NH|short|nolink}}, the only furniture sizes are 1×1, 2×1, and 2×2, with the exception of {{HHD|short}} crossover items in {{NLWa|short|nolink}}, which are 3×3.}} Many items that are not classified as furniture, such as [[gyroid]]s, [[fossil]]s, [[bug]]s, and [[fish]], can also be placed like furniture.

In all main series games, furniture is primarily obtained from [[Tom Nook's store]] or [[Timmy and Tommy's store]], with some furniture being exclusive to alternative sources such as other shops, [[special character]]s, or [[events]].

Furniture is represented by a leaf before being placed down. This is likely a reference to how in {{Wp|Japanese folklore}}, [[tanuki]] (the species of [[Tom Nook]] and the [[Timmy and Tommy|Nooklings]] in Japan) can transform leaves into valuable objects.

Each furniture is now categorized under a specific category: housewares, which cannot be placed on top of one another (except for {{I|Amp|NH}}, {{I|Bunny Day Planter Box|NH}}, {{I|Floor Sign|NH}}, {{I|Katana|NH}}, and {{I|Trash Bags|NH}}); miscellaneous, which can be placed on the floor, or on top of furniture items that allow items to be placed on its surface; wall-mounted, returning from {{NL|short}} and only able to be placed on the wall; and ceiling decor, which were added in version {{NHVer|2.0}} and can be hung from the ceiling. Furniture can also now be pushed in half-tile increments.

Like many types of items, furniture can now be crafted via the [[DIY]] system, which also allows for the customization of crafted furniture. Furniture can also be customized with {{I|Customization Kit|NH}}s or since {{NHVer|2.0}} with [[Cyrus]].

Some furniture items of a similar theme are categorized into collections by the [[Happy Home Academy]]. The player is awarded bonus HHA points if a complete collection is placed in a room. There are three types of collections: [[Series (furniture)|series]], [[set]]s, and [[theme]]s.
