Beginning in {{WW}}, the [[player]] has the option to change their '''hairstyle''' and '''hair color'''. Prior to {{NH}}, it is done at [[Harriet]]'s barber shop, [[Shampoodle]], and in {{NH|short|nolink}}, it is done by the player themself. In games where visiting Shampoodle is required to change the player's hairstyle, the answers to Harriet's questions will determine which hairstyle and color is received.

Players can also wear [[wigs]] in order to access additional hairstyles. While technically considered a type of [[headwear]], wigs will match the player's current hair color.

There are four new hairstyles for each gender, making for a total of twelve. Once the player has had their hair styled 15 times, [[Harriet]] will allow them to choose hairstyles of the opposite gender. Additionally, bed head, a messy hairstyle that appears when the player has not played for at least 15 days, is introduced. Bed hair cannot be fixed automatically; the only way to recover their previous hairstyle is to request it again at Shampoodle.

The player's hairstyle in {{NH}} is selected from a list at the beginning of the game and can be customized at any time by interacting with a mirror. Additionally, hair is no longer restricted by gender.

At the beginning of the game, eight hairstyles and eight hair colors are available. Six hairstyles are unlocked by interacting with a vanity for the first time. Further new hairstyles can be unlocked from packs that can be purchased from the [[Nook Miles Redemption]]: {{I|Top 6 Stylish Hairstyles|NH}}, {{I|Top 8 Cool Hairstyles|NH}}, and {{I|Top 8 Pop Hairstyles|NH}}, as well as {{I|Top 8 Stylish Hair Colors|NH}} for eight additional hair colors. Bed head now requires a month of inactivity to occur, and the player automatically "fixes" it after leaving their house, reverting to their previous hairstyle. This also unlocks the option to use bed head as a proper hairstyle.

The 1.6.0 [[Animal Crossing: New Horizons/Update history|Free Winter Update]] added a new hairstyle pack, {{I|Top 6 Stylish Hairstyles|NH}}, which offers six new hairstyles, including the option to be bald for the first time.

The [[Animal Crossing: New Horizons/Update history|2.0 Update]] adds {{I|Top 4 Fab Hairstyles|NH}}, which can be redeemed at the Nook Stop. Seven more hairstyles can be earned by speaking to [[Harriet]] at Harv's Island once a day. This makes for a total of 48 hairstyles in {{NH|nolink}}, including bed head.
