Tom Nook (Japanese: たぬきち Tanukichi) is a raccoon who owns a store in the player's town. He has appeared in all Animal Crossing games to date. Tom Nook buys and sells items, although he will always buy items for less than he will sell them back to you. Nook's store expands over time based on how many bells you have spent there. He has two nephews, Timmy and Tommy, who will work at the store when it reaches its largest size.

Working for Nook

When you first arrive in town, you'll be required to purchase a house. No matter which house you choose, the person you're going to be buying it from is always Tom Nook. Because it is the start of the game and you obviously don't have the bells to pay for the house, you're going to be forced to work at Nook's shop. Nook will have you perform a variety of tasks for him, which often involve learning tips from the other animals living in your town. This acts as a sort of tutorial for the game, which must be completed before you can use most of the game's features such as delivering items and planting flowers.

History

Before you moved into town, it seemed like Nook wasn't doing to well. Trying to sell items in the Mayor's old shed didn't work for him but when you took out a loan with him he got some money that he could use to add more items to his store. When you upgrade to the next house level, he will get more money, eventually upgrading to Nook n' Go, Nookway, and Nookington's. He has gained a better personaility going through his courier.

Personality

Tom Nook can be viewed as a kind but serious person. He's also somewhat cheap, paying only 1/4 the actual value to you if you wish to sell him an item. Despite this, selling items to Nook is still the most common method of earning bells. He appears to be rivals with Crazy Redd, who owns a similar shop but sells items at much higher prices. Some people think of Nook as a scam but actually he is not compared to Crazy Redd. Because he has nephews, it means he must have a sibling who is unknown in the franchise.

Appearance

Tom Nook's appearance changes based on which store he is currently operating, wearing anything from an apron all the way to a suit.
