:The {{I|customizable phone case kit|NH}} item allows the player to customize their phone to one of eight default customization patterns: Green, Red, Pink, Black, White, Blue, Yellow, and Beige. They can also use it to customize their phone into one of any of the default [[List of official designs#Sable's designs|Sable designs]]. The player does not immediately learn these designs, but they slowly collect them from Sable if they talk to her each day after befriending her. These Sable designs can also be used to customize certain furniture items, not just their NookPhone.

:Villagers wandering around outside will randomly take out their phone to browse it before putting it away, and sometimes they bring it out to take a photo of certain furniture placed outside. (You can also force them to take out their phone at Photopia via the "Take a Picture" Reaction at Photopia.)

:Villagers are similar in that their phone will initially be one of the eight default customization patterns. If the player has not learned any Sable designs, villagers will continue to use the default customization patterns. However, once the player learns the Sable design category, then villagers of that applicable category will upgrade their NookPhone. For example, if a villager's "final NookPhone" comes from the "Retro" category, they will upgrade their phone as soon as the player learns the "Retro" category of Sable designs. There are some villagers/special characters who have no upgraded NookPhone though, and they just continue using one of the eight default customization patterns forever.

:There's another layer of complexity. I was watching video footage of my friend design a villager's house request in {{HHP|short|nolink}}, a villager he did not have in his town. My friend owns all Sable patterns. However, during the house completion sequence, where they show the villager enjoying the house, this villager actually pulled out a NookPhone using one of the eight default customization patterns. So the villager was actually using their "initial NookPhone" rather than their "final NookPhone." Whether this is because of a special ruleset involving {{HHP|short|nolink}} itself, or because it is a villager who does not live in my friend's town, I'm not entirely sure.
