The '''campsite''' is a facility available for construction in {{NL}} and {{NH}}. In {{NL|short|nolink}}, it is a [[public works project]] that costs 59,800 [[Bell]]s to construct, and it cannot be demolished. In {{NH|short|nolink}} the campsite can be crafted and placed anywhere on the island. In both games, a villager can occupy the campsite on random days, and if space is available, they can be invited to [[Moving|move in]]. The campsite is only available for use by non-resident villagers, and allows a variety of special villager interactions with the camping villager known as minigames.

Campers accommodated by the campsite are never seen to sleep, roam the town or shop, and tents or igloos disappear at six o'clock in the morning (5:00 AM in {{NH|short|nolink}}), only when the player activates the morning rise and shine by exiting a building. Campers will not appear on days if there is an event that goes on all day or if a holiday takes place that day.

===Unlocking===
The public works project for the campsite is available as soon as the player is able to build public works projects. It costs 59,800 Bells, and it occupies a 3x3 space.

===Usage===

In {{NL}}, any non-resident villagers can stay at the campsite, which includes villagers seen previously, in friend towns or previous town residents. Interacting with them have their special benefits. Players may obtain many furniture and items from campers when playing their minigames, and a player may convince a villager to move into their town.

If a town has nine villagers and a campsite when the player convinces a camper to move in, the camper will take up the special tenth slot of the town. No unwarranted villagers will be able to move into a player's town if it has nine residents, unless they are StreetPassed into the town or invited when camping.

Having a camper in the town will not affect residents, as they will not talk about an occupied campsite or a camping stranger. Booker and Copper will take note of this however, though they are only unlocked by constructing the [[police station]].

===Tent campers===
From February 25 to December 10, campers that arrive for a visit on the town's campsite will set up a tent on the town's campsite. Inside, the villager may want to play a game with the player, if the player has 5,000 Bells or more and has one or more space in their pockets. The player can obtain special camping-themed furniture from the villager along with regular kinds of furniture, which is selected at random. The villager can also ask to play a game to sell one of the player's furniture, wallpaper, flooring or even regular tools (not counting silver or gold items though).

===Igloo campers===
From December 11 to February 24, campers that arrive for a visit on the town's campsite will set up an igloo on the town's campsite. Inside, the villager may want to play a game with the player, if the player has 5,000 Bells or more and has one or more space in their pockets. The player can obtain Winter Gear furniture from the villager along with regular kinds of furniture, which is selected at random. The villager can also ask to play a game to sell one of the player's furniture, wallpaper, flooring or even regular tools (not counting silver or gold items though).

===Unlocking===
Once [[Resident Services]] has been upgraded, if the Resident Representative asks [[Tom Nook]], "What should I do?", he will tell the player about building a campsite, and he will give them a single-use [[DIY]] recipe for a campsite construction kit. Once the kit is crafted, the player can choose where to place it, and it will be built the following day. 

The day after the campsite is built, a random [[smug]] villager will set up camp, and will remain indefinitely until arrangements are made for them to move onto the island, which is required for the "[[K.K. Slider#Animal Crossing: New Horizons|Project K]]" storyline to proceed. It is not possible to reject this villager; any conversation with them will end with an invitation to move to the island being issued and accepted, though the actual move will not occur until after a new villager housing plot has been placed.<ref>Grayson, N. In {{NH}}, after the initial camper has moved in, the campsite acts similarly to {{NL|short|nolink}}, where non-resident villagers can stay at the campsite on random days and be invited to move in. If there are no open spots for new villagers, the camper will name a random villager that is said to be thinking of leaving, and ask to speak with them about taking their place. If the player consents, the proposed villager will invariably agree to leaving. The villager chosen to move out cannot be changed once they have been selected.

Additionally, an ''Animal Crossing'' [[amiibo]] card can be scanned to invite a specific villager to the campsite. Using an amiibo card to invite a villager that is already living on the island will cause them to refuse the invitation. For a villager invited to the campsite via their amiibo card, the player has to craft an furniture item for them on three separate days before they will accept an invitation to move in. In this case, if there are no open spots, a current resident can be selected for the camper to negotiate with (which, again, they will always agree to) in order to move in. If the player leaves and returns to the campsite after fulfilling a crafting request, the villager will place their requested furniture on the top-right corner.

In either case, the evicted villager can be "adopted" by another player and can move in to their island.

===Inviting via amiibo===

Amiibo may be used at the [[Nook Stop]] in [[Resident Services]] to invite villagers to the campsite. 
* Prior to the [[Animal Crossing: New Horizons/Update history/2.0|2.0 update]], special characters who appear in the game (e.g. [[Tom Nook]]) were able to be contacted via the Nook Stop, but unable to be invited to the campsite, while special characters who were not in the game (e.g. [[Tortimer]]) were unable to be contacted.
* As of 2.0 update, which introduced all remaining special characters with amiibo into the game, attempting to scan any special character will yield the message, "It looks like you're attempting to use the amiibo for [character name], but [he/she] can't be invited to the campsite."
