Near the end of the festival, the ancient Japanese custom of hina-nagashi, in which the dolls are set afloat on a boat and ferried down a river to the sea, is practiced. This act symbolizes the release of worries and the passing of illness, as dolls, in Japanese culture, are said to contain bad spirits. The name "hinaningyo" refers specifically to the dolls.
