Editing Smug

As of the release of {{NH}}, there are a total of 38 smug villagers across the series; 37 appear in {{NH|short|nolink}}, with [[W. Link]] being the only smug villager not to appear in the game. In {{NL|short|nolink}}, smug villagers cannot be one of the starting villagers in the player's [[town]]. In {{NH|short|nolink}}, the first villager to appear at the [[Campsite (facility)|campsite]] is always smug.

Smug villagers commonly act arrogant, boastful, and egotistical (hence the name "smug", which means prideful), which may lead to them unintentionally belittling the player in a similar manner to [[snooty]] villagers. They tend to say phrases in other languages, such as Spanish or French. They speak with the voice that was originally used exclusively by [[Farley]] in {{PG}}: A sophisticated, charming voice. Like snooty villagers, smug villagers also enjoy gossiping about other villagers and spreading rumors. Beneath the surface, however, they are kind-hearted villagers that act very polite, sometimes gentlemanly, and may flirt with the player, regardless of gender, when befriended.

 

The personality is likely derived from the behavior of the [[cranky]] [[Islander|islanders]] in {{PG}} and {{DnMe+}}, specifically [[Flash]], [[O'Hare]], and [[Rowan]], alongside [[Curlos]], [[Frank]], and [[Weldon]] in ''e+'', which behave in a similar manner to smug villagers. However, only O'Hare and Curlos return with the smug personality, and [[Kidd]], who was lazy as an islander, is given this personality as well. Additionally, despite being apparently based on the mannerisms of cranky islanders in early games, smug villagers feature voices more similar in pitch to other personality types, rather than the deep voices that still remain exclusive to cranky characters.

In {{NL}}, smug villagers go to sleep at 2:00 AM and wake up at 8:30 AM. In {{NH}}, they usually go to sleep at 2:00 AM and wake up at 7:00 AM.

Due to their boastful attitudes, [[cranky]] villagers express a bitter distaste for smug villagers, who will claim that they are "mucking around". [[Big sister]] villagers may also be irritated by smug villagers due to their enjoyment of spreading gossip, or due to their flirtatious nature. On the other hand, smug villagers get along perfectly with other smug villagers, and [[snooty]] villagers due to common behaviors and interests: snooty villagers are also arrogant and boastful while leading elegant lifestyles. [[Peppy]] villagers will admire smug villagers and their fashion sense, and will see them as a sort of "big brother" in comparison to them. [[Lazy]] villagers also get along with smug villagers, due to smug villagers having a laid-back sense of humor, which lazy villagers find amusing.

*Discounting species that exclusively contain female villagers, no [[bull]], [[bear cub]], [[elephant]], [[kangaroo]], [[monkey]], [[rhinoceros]], or [[tiger]] villagers have ever had the smug personality.

**Additionally, no [[cat]] or [[Octopus (species)|octopus]] villagers initially had the smug personality, but {{NH|short}} did introduce one villager of each of those species with said personality. The [[Animal Crossing: New Horizons/Update history/2.0 |2.0 Free Update]] also reintroduced Roswell to the series with his personality changed from lazy to smug, making him the first smug alligator.

*No smug villagers have a birthday in [[January]] or [[February]]. The earliest birthday belongs to Julian (March 15).

*No smug villagers have the fashion [[hobby]] in {{NH|short|nolink}}.

**They share this trait with [[jock]], [[cranky]], and [[big sister]] villagers.
