The bench is a landscape feature introduced in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, appearing as a public works project. It serves the same purpose as a bench in a house, though it is outside. Villagers can be found sitting on them occasionally, and a player can also sit on them. Like the ones in a house, two people can sit on them at once.
