The Nintendo Entertainment System (often abbreviated as NES; known in Japan as the Famicom, short for Family Computer) is a video game console released by Nintendo in 1985, and was the second video game console developed by Nintendo after the Color TV-Game series, as well as Nintendo's first internationally released video game console. The NES/Famicom sold 61.91 million units worldwide[1] during its lifetime making it a critical and commercial success. The NES is also largely credited in revitalizing the video game console market in North America after the Video game crash of 1983, in which consumers and retailers were losing interest in video games due to the overabundance of systems for consumers to choose from and poor quality titles (most notably E.T the Extra Terrestrial and the Atari 2600 port of Pac Man).
