In 2010, Fandom began a forceful implementation of their new skin "Oasis", which upset various wikis on the website's redesign, coupled with tensions between the staff of Fandom and the members of the wiki. Many opted to fork the content away from Fandom into newly independent wikis. Animal Crossing Wiki (then known as Animal Crossing City) was one of the wikis that had its content forked into a new wiki. Although the whole community did not move, the majority did, mainly due to conflicting interests with Fandom staff and the limitations of their service. The staff members urging to leave managed to complete the transfer of nearly the entire database of Animal Crossing City to the independent wiki "Animal Crossing Wiki", who would later be renamed [[Nookipedia]].

This article is about the Fandom-hosted wiki. For the wiki formerly known as Animal Crossing Wiki, see Nookipedia.

Animal Crossing Wiki (formerly known as Animal Crossing City) is a wiki hosted by the wiki-farm Fandom (formerly Wikia) that was founded by Aeryka in August 2005. The wiki provides information for the entire Animal Crossing series, including the film.

The articles can be edited by any registered member of Fandom, however unregistered members were permitted to edit before Animal Crossing Wiki required users to be logged-in to edit. Editors collaborate with set guidelines through talk pages and the Fandom blog system. As with other Fandom wikis, the Animal Crossing Wiki also provides its own forum discussion for members of the community to post about various Animal Crossing-related content.

Nookipedia owes much of its history to the creation of Animal Crossing City and its eventual split.

History

As Animal Crossing City

Animal Crossing City was founded in August 2005 by a user named Aeryka. While she served as the wiki's main creator, her contributions to the wiki were minimal despite the community around the wiki beginning to grow. The wiki experienced immense growth by 2009 thanks to Animal Crossing: City Folk.[1]

The staff members urging to leave managed to complete the transfer of nearly the entire database of Animal Crossing City to the independent wiki "Animal Crossing Wiki", who would later be renamed Nookipedia.

As Animal Crossing Wiki

Fandom continued to manage the wiki after most of the staff had quit, including its founder Aeryka.[1] The remaining staff continued work to provide a source for all Animal Crossing content. By 2013, in anticipation of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the wiki changed its name to "Animal Crossing Wiki", which had formerly been abandoned on Nookipedia. At the same time, some users that had left to Nookipedia returned to Animal Crossing Wiki, including Dragonfree97, a former director of Nookipedia that defected back to Animal Crossing Wiki. Since it's acquisition by Fandom in 2018 via Gamepedia, it has also been a sister wiki of Zelda Wiki.

In February 2021, the wiki underwent a severe trolling attack that led to the shutdown of the entire wiki for a couple of days. Editors were still permitted to use the forums during this time.[2]
